    Spectroscopic binaries with elliptical orbits

The radial velocity curves of many spectroscopic binaries (SBs) are perturbed by gas streams or proximity effects. For SBs with circular orbits, these perturbations can give rise to spurious orbital eccentricities of high statistical significance. But tests to identify such anomalous orbits can be constructed since perturbed velocity curves are in general no longer Keplerian. The derived tests are applied both to synthetic and to observed velocity curves.Comment: 9pages,3figures,accepted by A&

The purpose of this study was to assess the needs of research assistants at Middle East Technical University in relation to instructional planning, effective teaching and evaluation, and their awareness level related to self-improvement in an academic context. Data sources were the research assistants who were enrolled on tire program in the Fall term of 2001-2002 academic year, the instructor and her assistant. During the study, qualitative data were gathered and a content analysis technique was adopted to analyze data. Results revealed that prospective instructors have a subject-oriented approach in planning, teaching and evaluation, and they view self-improvement as the improvement of knowledge in the subject. Although program goals seem to be in line with needs, certain practices should be implemented to achieve better outcomes.

    Millisecond Pulsar Velocities

We present improved timing parameters for 13 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) including 9 new proper motion measurements. These new proper motions bring to 23 the number of MSPs with measured transverse velocities. In light of these new results we present and compare the kinematic properties of MSPs with those of ordinary pulsars. The mean transverse velocity of MSPs was found to be 85+/-13 km/s; a value consistent with most models for the origin and evolution of MSPs and approximately a factor of four lower than that of ordinary pulsars. We also find that, in contrast to young ordinary pulsars, the vast majority of which are moving away from the Galactic plane, almost half of the MSPs are moving towards the plane. This near isotropy would be expected of a population that has reached dynamic equilibrium. Accurate measurements of MSP velocities have allowed us to correct their measured spin-down rates for Doppler acceleration effects, and thereby derive their intrinsic magnetic field strengths and characteristic ages. We find that close to half of our sample of MSPs have a characteristic age comparable to or greater than the age of the Galaxy.Comment: 10 pages LaTeX including 2 LaTeX tables and 3 postscript figures; submitted to MNRA

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
Este estudo identifica a importância do fortalecimento na direção da profissão para o enfrentamento das relações de força presentes no cotidiano profissional, que repercutem em todos os trabalhadores (independentemente do espaço sócio-ocupacional em que estão inseridos) diante das implicações particulares dos modelos de gestãoIn this thesis we start from the premise of the social worker’s work as an activity inscribed in the production process and inserted in the social division of work, being, therefore, the professional who experiences the impacts of institutional relations in their daily life. The study adopts as a central object the work of social workers that are active in health policy in São Paulo. In the pandemic scenario experienced around the world, the research field was expanded in order to discuss the work of the social worker in health institutions that are reference in the assistance of Covid-19 patients, seeking to identify the pandemic repercussions on their professional practice, especially the effect in their duties and professional competencies. For the comprehension of the object, the research established a theoretical foundation about the counter-reform, in the capitalism economic proposal, as a way of actualizing the neoliberal state logic, recognizing the intentionality of this management model. Consequently, the study presents a reflection on the neoliberal model in the Health Policy materiality from 1990 to 2020, considering history as an essential element for the understanding of power relations and as a way of acting in the present time. Methodologically, the research was developed in two phases: at first a field research based on quantitative methodology directed to social workers acting in health institutions that are reference in the assistance of Covid-19 patients; and, later, a field research composed of quantitative and qualitative methodology, whose proposal was to analyze the work of social workers in health policy socio-occupational spaces (in public management institutions and institutions that are managed via social organization) and the consequences of the state counter-reform in the work process. Both phases were fundamental to understand the professional practice daily work in health institutions. This study identifies the importance of strengthening the profession in a way that social workers can face power relations that are present in their daily professional life, which have repercussions on all workers (regardless of the socio-occupational space in which they are inserted) in view of the particular implications of management modelsCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPE
