Whitewashing our children\u27s education: Examining segregationist school choice in the rural South

In response to the national desegregation of schools from 1954-1976, white communities across the country formed segregationist academies to provide a privatized education to white children. In this study, I examined why parents in the rural South continue to choose these schools, as well as what this schooling environment means for the ‘comprehensive racial learning’ processes of its white, class-privileged student body. Drawing on 20 semi-structured interviews with parents who chose a segregationist academy in Mississippi as well as 20 interviews with children who attend this school, I found that parents justified their decision using racialized understandings of what constitutes a ‘good’ schooling environment. Additionally, this context of childhood directly influenced the kids’ perceptions of themselves as racial subjects, including the ways in which they justified their position in the reproduction of racial inequality. Overall, this study contributes to understandings of the ways that class privilege, rurality, and Christianity inform white identity formation and racial learning processes

Molekulare Dissoziation im elektronischen Grundzustand induziert durch Femtosekundenpulse im mittleren Infrarot

This work investigates the possibilities of ground-state chemistry by exciting molecular vibrations with femtosecond pulses in the mid-infrared. Vibrational ladder-climbing to high excitation levels (v=7-8) provides the necessary energy for bond scission. This excitation scheme was demonstrated with metal carbonyls and diazomethane. Only ultrashort laser pulses allow for excitation and subsequent reaction on a time scale faster than the statistical energy redistribution (IVR).Diese Arbeit untersucht die Möglichkeiten von Grundzustandschemie durch Schwingungsanregung von Molekülen mittels Femtosekundenpulsen im mittleren Infrarot. Durch direkte Anregung der Schwingungsleiter bis auf hohe Niveaus (v=7-8) wird die für einen Bindungsbruch notwendige Energie im Molekül deponiert. An Metallcarbonylen und Diazomethan wurde dieses Anregungsschema realisiert. Nur die Anregung mit extrem kurzen Laserpulsen bietet die Möglichkeit, einen Reaktionsablauf schneller als die statistische Energieumverteilung (IVR) zu erzielen

+21dBm erbium power amplifier pumped by a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser

Efficient energy transfer has been demonstrated in an Er/Yb co-doped phosphorus doped silica fiber for the first time. This has indirectly allowed the use of reliable, high-power AlGaAs diode laser arrays as the semiconductor pump source through the use of a diode-pumped Nd:YAG (DPL) laser operating at 1064 nm. Small signal gains of 42 dB and output powers of 71 mW (+18.5 dBm) have been observed with a single DPL. Bidirectional pumping with two DPLs has yielded an output power of 130 mW (+21 dBm)
