Enacting LGBTQ TESOL Stories through Ethnodramatic Readers Theatre
The intersections of LGBTQ English-language teaching professionals’ socially-constructed identities impact how they perform in classrooms, conferences, and in the world. This inquiry empirically collected, analyzed, and ethhnotheatrically (re)presents the lived experiences of LGBTQs involved in the marginalized profession of TESOL. Attendees have opportunity to walk in the speech of another through participation in a readers theatre representation of personal and professional transformations
In situ Measurement of Biaxial Modulus of Si Anode for Li-ion Batteries
We report in situ measurement of biaxial moduli of a Si thin-film electrode
as a function of its lithium concentration. During lithiation, biaxial
compressive stress is induced in the Si film and it undergoes plastic flow. At
any state-of-charge (SOC), a relatively small delithiation-relithiation
sequence unloads and reloads the film elastically. From the stress and strain
changes during a delithiation-relithiation cycle, the biaxial modulus of the
film is calculated. Stress change is obtained by measuring the change in
substrate curvature using a Multi-beam Optical Sensor; the elastic strain
change is obtained from the change in SOC. By repeating these measurements at
several different values of SOC, the biaxial modulus was seen to decrease from
ca. 70 GPa for Li0.32Si to ca. 35 GPa for Li3.0Si. Such a significant reduction
in elastic modulus has important implications for modeling stress evolution and
mechanical degradation in Si-based anodes.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Spatial Price Discovery, Dynamics, and Leadership in Evolving Distiller’s Grain Markets
Recent dramatic growth in corn-based bio-refining has generated considerable growth in the by-product of this process, distiller’s grains. Distiller’s grains are rapidly becoming important livestock feed ingredient sources. However, little public market information is available on distiller’s grain. This study determines spatial and temporal price relationships among distiller’s grain markets. Results indicate spatial distiller’s grain markets operate somewhat independently suggesting potential arbitrage opportunities and indicating distiller’s grain markets are information starved. Furthermore, available futures markets are not viable price risk transfer tools for distiller’s grains.Crop Production/Industries, Demand and Price Analysis,
Out of Our Comfort Zones: Reflections about Teaching Qualitative Research at a Distance
How does an increase in distance technology alter the teaching of qualitative research? This article uses a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (McKinney, 2007) framework in which each author collected data in the form of personal narrative essays about teaching qualitative research from a distance, course products, teaching evaluations, and student comments. Individually we created a narrative reflection on the teaching and learning of qualitative methodology; particularly comparing our individual experiences with both distance and in-person teaching formats. Through these reflective essays, we provide ideas about our teaching of qualitative research via distance technology as a conceptual conversation about the nature of teaching qualitative research in non-face-to-face settings within schools of education. Looking across the essays we found that teaching qualitative methodology is rooted in relational ideas that may be difficult in a distance setting. We each individually struggled with the loss of time for learning new technology or traveling over a distance, which may have compromised the integrity of our other faculty job requirements. One common recommendation was that there be some level of face-to-face interaction, even over distance technologies, as a way to facilitate relational concepts in qualitative teaching
Short versus long silver nanowires: a comparison of in vivo pulmonary effects post instillation.
BackgroundSilver nanowires (Ag NWs) are increasingly being used to produce touchscreens for smart phones and computers. When applied in a thin film over a plastic substrate, Ag NWs create a transparent, highly-conductive network of fibers enabling the touch interface between consumers and their electronics. Large-scale application methods utilize techniques whereby Ag NW suspensions are deposited onto substrates via droplets. Aerosolized droplets increase risk of occupational Ag NW exposure. Currently, there are few published studies on Ag NW exposure-related health effects. Concerns have risen about the potential for greater toxicity from exposure to high-aspect ratio nanomaterials compared to their non-fibrous counterparts. This study examines whether Ag NWs of varying lengths affect biological responses and silver distribution within the lungs at different time-points.MethodsTwo different sizes of Ag NWs (2 μm [S-Ag NWs] and 20 μm [L-Ag NWs]) were tested. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats were intratracheally instilled with Ag NWs (0, 0.1, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/kg). Broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lung tissues were obtained at 1, 7, and 21 days post exposure for analysis of BAL total cells, cell differentials, and total protein as well as tissue pathology and silver distribution. Results and conclusionsThe two highest doses produced significant increases in BAL endpoints. At Day 1, Ag NWs increased total cells, inflammatory polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs), and total protein. PMNs persisted for both Ag NW types at Day 7, though not significantly so, and by Day 21, PMNs appeared in line with sham control values. Striking histopathological features associated with Ag NWs included 1) a strong influx of eosinophils at Days 1 and 7; and 2) formation of Langhans and foreign body giant cells at Days 7 and 21. Epithelial sloughing in the terminal bronchioles (TB) and cellular exudate in alveolar regions were also common. By Day 21, Ag NWs were primarily enclosed in granulomas or surrounded by numerous macrophages in the TB-alveolar duct junction. These findings suggest short and long Ag NWs produce pulmonary toxicity; thus, further research into exposure-related health effects and possible exposure scenarios are necessary to ensure human safety as Ag NW demand increases
