    Disaster risk, climate change, and poverty: assessing the global exposure of poor people to floods and droughts

    People living in poverty are particularly vulnerable to shocks, including those caused by natural disasters such as floods and droughts. This paper analyses household survey data and hydrological riverine flood and drought data for 52 countries to find out whether poor people are disproportionally exposed to floods and droughts, and how this exposure may change in a future climate. We find that poor people are often disproportionally exposed to droughts and floods, particularly in urban areas. This pattern does not change significantly under future climate scenarios, although the absolute number of people potentially exposed to floods or droughts can increase or decrease significantly, depending on the scenario and region. In particular, many countries in Africa show a disproportionally high exposure of poor people to floods and droughts. For these hotspots, implementing risk-sensitive land-use and development policies that protect poor people should be a priority

    Assessing flood risk at the global scale: model setup, results, and sensitivity

    Globally, economic losses from flooding exceeded 19billionin2012,andarerisingrapidly.Hence,thereisanincreasingneedforglobalscalefloodriskassessments,alsowithinthecontextofintegratedglobalassessments.Wehavedevelopedandvalidatedamodelcascadeforproducingglobalfloodriskmaps,basedonnumerousfloodreturnperiods.Validationresultsindicatethatthemodelsimulatesinterannualfluctuationsinfloodimpactswell.Thecascadeinvolves:hydrologicalandhydraulicmodelling;extremevaluestatistics;inundationmodelling;floodimpactmodelling;andestimatingannualexpectedimpacts.Theinitialresultsestimateglobalimpactsforseveralindicators,forexampleannualexpectedexposedpopulation(169million);andannualexpectedexposedGDP(19 billion in 2012, and are rising rapidly. Hence, there is an increasing need for global-scale flood risk assessments, also within the context of integrated global assessments. We have developed and validated a model cascade for producing global flood risk maps, based on numerous flood return-periods. Validation results indicate that the model simulates interannual fluctuations in flood impacts well. The cascade involves: hydrological and hydraulic modelling; extreme value statistics; inundation modelling; flood impact modelling; and estimating annual expected impacts. The initial results estimate global impacts for several indicators, for example annual expected exposed population (169 million); and annual expected exposed GDP (1383 billion). These results are relatively insensitive to the extreme value distribution employed to estimate low frequency flood volumes. However, they are extremely sensitive to the assumed flood protection standard; developing a database of such standards should be a research priority. Also, results are sensitive to the use of two different climate forcing datasets. The impact model can easily accommodate new, user-defined, impact indicators. We envisage several applications, for example: identifying risk hotspots; calculating macro-scale risk for the insurance industry and large companies; and assessing potential benefits (and costs) of adaptation measures

    This support paper is intended to give both a technical and theoretical background for my thesis show. The primary exploration is wood firing and its ability to capture the flames movement in the kiln. This work is inspired by transient natural phenomena. I draw the comparison between the movement of the flame and as through the kiln, their ability to modify the surface of the vessels in the kiln, and the natural forces that shape geographic features in nature. The transient nature of flames can be captured and frozen on the surface of the works that I stack in the kiln. These natural media simply allow us to see currents and otherwise unseen fluid patterns that are constantly permeating our surroundings. Outlined as well is the construction of the Georgia Southern University Anagama (Dorothy) and the troubleshooting and modifications that it underwent during the course of developing my thesis work

Om deze beslissingen zorgvuldig te nemen is informatie nodig over hoe het klimaat en de stijgende zeespiegel dit waterbeheer zullen beïnvloeden. De modellen die de gevolgen van klimaatverandering berekenen zullen daarom met dezelfde klimaat forcering en gekoppeld aan elkaar moeten worden gebruikt.     The credibility challenge for global fluvial flood risk analysis

    Quantifying flood hazard is an essential component of resilience planning, emergency response, and mitigation, including insurance. Traditionally undertaken at catchment and national scales, recently, efforts have intensified to estimate flood risk globally to better allow consistent and equitable decision making. Global flood hazard models are now a practical reality, thanks to improvements in numerical algorithms, global datasets, computing power, and coupled modelling frameworks. Outputs of these models are vital for consistent quantification of global flood risk and in projecting the impacts of climate change. However, the urgency of these tasks means that outputs are being used as soon as they are made available and before such methods have been adequately tested. To address this, we compare multi-probability flood hazard maps for Africa from six global models and show wide variation in their flood hazard, economic loss and exposed population estimates, which has serious implications for model credibility. While there is around 30-40% agreement in flood extent, our results show that even at continental scales, there are significant differences in hazard magnitude and spatial pattern between models, notably in deltas, arid/semi-arid zones and wetlands. This study is an important step towards a better understanding of modelling global flood hazard, which is urgently required for both current risk and climate change projections
