Fundamental properties of the Population II fiducial stars HD 122563 and Gmb 1830 from CHARA interferometric observations

We have determined the angular diameters of two metal-poor stars, HD 122563 and Gmb 1830, using CHARA and Palomar Testbed Interferometer observations. For the giant star HD 122563, we derive an angular diameter theta_3D = 0.940 +- 0.011 milliarcseconds (mas) using limb-darkening from 3D convection simulations and for the dwarf star Gmb 1830 (HD 103095) we obtain a 1D limb-darkened angular diameter theta_1D = 0.679 +- 0.007 mas. Coupling the angular diameters with photometry yields effective temperatures with precisions better than 55 K (Teff = 4598 +- 41 K and 4818 +- 54 K --- for the giant and the dwarf star, respectively). Including their distances results in very well-determined luminosities and radii (L = 230 +- 6 L_sun, R = 23.9 +- 1.9 R_sun and L = 0.213 +- 0.002 L_sun, R = 0.664 +- 0.015 R_sun, respectively). We used the CESAM2k stellar structure and evolution code in order to produce models that fit the observational data. We found values of the mixing-length parameter alpha (which describes 1D convection) that depend on the mass of the star. The masses were determined from the models with precisions of <3% and with the well-measured radii excellent constraints on the surface gravity are obtained (log g = 1.60 +- 0.04, 4.59 +- 0.02, respectively). The very small errors on both log g and Teff provide stringent constraints for spectroscopic analyses given the sensitivity of abundances to both of these values. The opposite of Dante's hell? The transfer of ideas for social housing at international congresses in the 1850s–1860s

With the advent of industrialization, the question of developing adequate housing for the emergent working classes became more pressing than before. Moreover, the problem of unhygienic houses in industrial cities did not stop at the borders of a particular nation-state; sometimes literally as pandemic diseases spread out 'transnationally'. It is not a coincidence that in the nineteenth century the number of international congresses on hygiene and social topics expanded substantially. However, the historiography about social policy in general and social housing in particular, has often focused on individual cases because of the different pace of industrial and urban development and is thus dominated by national perspectives. In this paper, I elaborate on transnational exchange processes and local adaptations and transformations. I focus on the transfer of the housing model of SOMCO in Mulhouse, (a French house building association) during social international congresses. I examine whether cross-national networking enabled and facilitated the implementation of ideas on the local scale. I will elaborate on the transmission and the local adaptation of the Mulhouse-model in Belgium. Bio-efficacy of hydroxy-selenomethionine as a selenium supplement in pregnant dairy heifers and on the selenium status of their calves

This study aimed to determine the effects of supplementing pregnant heifers with the organic selenium source 2-hydroxy-4-methylselenobutanoic acid (HMSeBA) during last eight weeks of pregnancy on dam and calf Se status. A total of 42 in-calf heifers were recruited to the study and randomly allocated to one of three treatments; a negative control (Con), sodium selenite (NaSe) or HMSeBA. Animals were blocked by body weight, body condition score, and expected calving date prior to treatment allocation. Following enrollment all animals underwent a seven week wash-out period after which they received their respective supplements, topped dressed daily onto a basal diet for the last eight weeks of pregnancy. Heifer blood samples were taken at weekly intervals from enrollment until two weeks before expected calving date, and as soon as possible after calving for determination of whole blood glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px) and plasma selenium (Se) and malondealdehyde (MDA) concentrations. Selenized amino acids were determined in plasma samples taken at three weeks pre-calving. A colostrum sample was taken as close to parturition as possible for determination of colostrum total Se, selenized amino acid, and Immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration. Calves were blood sampled as close to birth as possible for determination of whole blood GSH-Px activity and plasma Se and MDA concentration. Differences in whole blood GSH-Px activity did not become apparent until calving; GSH-Px activity was lowest in Con heifers (P < 0.05) but similar between NaSe and HMSeBA. Plasma Se was lowest in unsupplemented heifers and greatest in those supplemented with HMSeBA (P < 0.001) and this was attributable to greater selenomethionine concentrations in the plasma of HMSeBA heifers (P < 0.01). Colostrum Se was lowest in Con heifers and greatest in HMSeBA (P < 0.001), the greater Se concentration of HMSeBA heifers was attributable to a greater proportion of total Se comprising selenocysteine (P = 0.061), the reason for this is not known. There was no effect of supplementation on colostrum IgG concentration. Plasma Se was lowest in those calves born to Con heifers and greatest in those born to HMSeBA heifers (P < 0.001). There were no effects of treatment on calf whole blood GSH-Px activity or plasma MDA concentration. The enhanced Se status associated with HMSeBA supplementation is likely a consequence of selenomethionine supply and may confer benefits to both the dam and her calf post-partum

Gender Bias in Bewertungsdiskursen und -praktiken wissenschaftlicher Leistungen

Wissenschaftliche Exzellenz wird im Zuge von Bewertungsprozessen von Wissenschaftler/-innen in Auswahlverfahren und bei der Nachwuchsförderung konkretisiert. Aber wie konstruieren und reflektieren Wissenschaftler/-innen Exzellenz und wie werden diese Ideen von Exzellenz geschlechterdifferenzierend praktiziert? Um dies zu untersuchen, wurden Interviews mit Wissenschaftler/-innen einer deutschen Universität in verschiedenen Phasen einer wissenschaftlichen Karriere durchgeführt. Die Erzählungen zeigen verschiedene Aspekte, die den Exzellenzdiskurs entscheidend prägen und die Normen des „idealen Wissenschaftlers“ stabilisieren. Es wird gezeigt, wie Exzellenz mit ihrer engen Verbindung zum Konzept des „idealen Wissenschaftlers“ zur Chancenungleichheit in der Wissenschaft beiträgt, indem Gender und Exzellenz als soziale Ko-Konstruktionen im Arbeitsalltag von Wissenschaftler/-innen und in Auswahlverfahren hergestellt werden

Langoron: Music and Dance Performance Realities Among the Lak People of Southern New Ireland, Papua New Guinea

This thesis seeks to describe the indigenous realities, meanings, and perspectives that are central to the music and dance practices of the Lak (Siar) people in Southern New Ireland, Papua Now Guinea. The insights recorded here are those gained through the experience of twenty-three months living in Rei and Siar villages as a participant in many aspects of Lak social life. The music and dance practices of the region are examined in the context of the wider social and cultural setting. Lak performance realities, are indivisible from kinship structures, ritual proceedings and spirituality. By contextualising Lak music and dance within the frame of the extensive and socially defining mortuary, rites my intention is to show how music and dance not only reflect but also create Lak realities. By examining the ethnographic materials relating to music, dance and performance in the context of mortuary sequence broader elements of Lak society are brought into focus. In these pages I argue that Lak society is reproduced literally and symbolically in these performances

"Der Gebrauch von Alltagstechnologien wird gewöhnlich als eine 'passive' Handlung betrachtet, in der die Nutzenden sich den Gebrauchsanweisungen der ProduzentInnen von Technologie anpassen. Bislang wurde deshalb die Aneignung von Technik in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Technikforschung zumeist unter dem Gesichtspunkt von Macht- bzw. Ungleichheitsbeziehungen diskutiert und unter den Aspekten von Gender, Klasse, Ethnie interpretiert. Jedoch sind die Nutzenden von Technik nicht machtlos. Sie gestalten ihr Leben in Verbindung mit ihren Bedürfnissen und Kompetenzen durch die kreative Manipulation von technischen Produkten, Symbolen und sozialen Systemen. Wie eine bestimmte Technik genutzt wird, praktisch und symbolisch, ist oftmals weit entfernt von der ursprünglichen Vorstellung der ProduzentInnen. Die Aushandlungen über das, was als funktionale Alltagstechnik zu gelten hat, können dabei bedeutsame Auswirkungen auf den Gestaltungsprozess von Technik nehmen. Die Analyse der Phasen, die eine Technik durchläuft bis sie zu einer Alltagstechnik wird, wirft somit Licht auf die Anpassungsmechanismen, die zwischen Nutzenden und einer neuen Technik stattfinden - sowohl auf materieller als auch auf symbolischer Ebene. Aus dem Blickwinkel dieser 'interpretativen Flexibilität' (Latour & Woolgar) sollen in diesem Beitrag Nutzungsstrukturen, symbolische Ausdrucksweisen und individuelle Umgangsweisen von Technik im Alltag aufgezeigt werden. Dabei soll im Blick behalten werden, dass auch über die geschlechtstypische Aneignung und Nutzung von Alltagstechnologien Verhältnisse sozialer Ungleichheit vermittelt werden. Ausgehend vom sozialkonstruktivistischen Konzept der Ko-Konstruktion von Gender und Technik soll dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen individueller Technikaneignung und Ausgrenzung aus sozio-technischen Handlungsfeldern exemplarisch an Alltagstechnologien durch Sekundäranalysen rekonstruiert werden. Diese Analysen schließen zugleich auch die entgegen gesetzte Perspektive - die Frage nach den Chancen egalisierender Wirkungen von Technik - mit ein. Es soll dargelegt werden, wie durch den aktiven Beitrag von Techniknutzenden die Konstruktion der alltäglichen Technikkultur beeinflusst wird und welchen Einfluss dies auf die konventionellen Muster und Vorstellungen von Technik und Geschlecht in unserer Gesellschaft haben kann."
