Health warning: might contain multiple personalities - the problem of homonyms in Thomson Reuters Essential Science Indicators
Author name ambiguity is a crucial problem in any type of bibliometric analysis. It arises when several authors share the same name, but also when one author expresses their name in different ways. This article focuses on the former, also called the “namesake” problem. In particular, we assess the extent to which this compromises the Thomson Reuters Essential Science Indicators (ESI) ranking of the top 1% most cited authors worldwide. We show that three demographic characteristics that should be unrelated to research productivity – name origin, uniqueness of one’s family name, and the number of initials used in publishing – in fact have a very strong influence on it.
In contrast to what could be expected from Web of Science publication data, researchers with Asian names – and in particular Chinese and Korean names – appear to be far more productive than researchers with Western names. Furthermore, for any country, academics with common names and fewer initials also appear to be more productive than their more uniquely named counterparts. However, this appearance of high productivity is caused purely by the fact that these “academic superstars” are in fact composites of many individual academics with the same name. We thus argue that it is high time that Thomson Reuters starts taking name disambiguation in general, and non-Anglophone names in particular, more seriously
Flavonoid intake and the risk of age-related cataract in China’s Heilongjiang Province
Background/Objectives: Epidemiological evidence suggests that diets rich in flavonoids may reduce the risk of developing age-related cataract (ARC). Flavonoids are widely distributed in foods of plant origin and the objective of this study was to evaluate retrospectively the association between the intakes of the five flavonoid subclasses and the risk of ARC. Subjects/Methods: A population-based case-control study (249 cases and 66 controls) was carried out in Heilongjiang province, which is located in the Northeast of China, and where intakes and availability of fresh vegetables and fruits can be limited. Dietary data gathered by food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were used to calculate flavonoid intake. Adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated by logistic regression. Results: No linear associations between risk of developing ARC and intakes of total dietary flavonoids, anthocyanidins, flavon-3-ol, flavanone, total flavones or total flavonols were found, but quercetin and isorhamnetin intake was inversely associated with ARC risk (OR 11.78, 95% CI: 1.62-85.84, P<0.05, and OR 6.99, 95% CI:1.12-43.44, P<0.05, quartile 4 vs quartile 1, respectively). Conclusion: As quercetin is contained in many plant foods and isorhamnetin is only contained in very few foods, we concluded that higher quercetin intake may be an important dietary factor in the reduction of risk of age-related cataract

Growth of Continuous Monolayer Graphene with Millimeter-sized Domains Using Industrially Safe Conditions.
We demonstrate the growth of continuous monolayer graphene films with millimeter-sized domains on Cu foils under intrinsically safe, atmospheric pressure growth conditions, suitable for application in roll-to-roll reactors. Previous attempts to grow large domains in graphene have been limited to isolated graphene single crystals rather than as part of an industrially useable continuous film. With both appropriate pre-treatment of the Cu and optimization of the CH4 supply, we show that it is possible to grow continuous films of monolayer graphene with millimeter scale domains within 80 min by chemical vapour deposition. The films are grown under industrially safe conditions, i.e., the flammable gases (H2 and CH4) are diluted to well below their lower explosive limit. The high quality, spatial uniformity, and low density of domain boundaries are demonstrated by charge carrier mobility measurements, scanning electron microscope, electron diffraction study, and Raman mapping. The hole mobility reaches as high as ~5,7002 m(2) V(-1) s(-1) in ambient conditions. The growth process of such high-quality graphene with a low H2 concentration and short growth times widens the possibility of industrial mass production

Gene and protein expression of glucose transporter 1 and glucose transporter 3 in human laryngeal cancer—the relationship with regulatory hypoxia-inducible factor-1α expression, tumor invasiveness, and patient prognosis
Increased glucose uptake mediated by glucose
transporters and reliance on glycolysis are common features
of malignant cells. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α supports the
adaptation of hypoxic cells by inducing genes related to
glucose metabolism. The contribution of glucose transporter
(GLUT) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) activity to
tumor behavior and their prognostic value in head and neck
cancers remains unclear. The aim of this study was to examine
the predictive value of GLUT1, GLUT3, and HIF-1α messenger
RNA (mRNA)/protein expression as markers of tumor
aggressiveness and prognosis in laryngeal cancer. The level of
hypoxia/metabolic marker genes was determined in 106 squamous
cell laryngeal cancer (SCC) and 73 noncancerous
matched mucosa (NCM) controls using quantitative realtime
PCR. The related protein levels were analyzed by
Western blot. Positive expression of SLC2A1, SLC2A3, and
HIF-1α genes was noted in 83.9, 82.1, and 71.7 % of SCC
specimens and in 34.4, 59.4, and 62.5 % of laryngeal cancer
samples. Higher levels of mRNA/protein for GLUT1 and
HIF-1α were noted in SCC compared to NCM (p<0.05).
SLC2A1 was found to have a positive relationship with grade,
tumor front grading (TFG) score, and depth and mode of
invasion (p<0.05). SLC2A3 was related to grade and invasion
type (p<0.05). There were also relationships of HIF-1α with
pTNM, TFG scale, invasion depth and mode, tumor recurrences,
and overall survival (p<0.05). In addition, more advanced
tumors were found to be more likely to demonstrate
positive expression of these proteins. In conclusion, the
hypoxia/metabolic markers studied could be used as molecular
markers of tumor invasiveness in laryngeal cancer.This work was supported, in part, by the statutory

GIVE: portable genome browsers for personal websites.
Growing popularity and diversity of genomic data demand portable and versatile genome browsers. Here, we present an open source programming library called GIVE that facilitates the creation of personalized genome browsers without requiring a system administrator. By inserting HTML tags, one can add to a personal webpage interactive visualization of multiple types of genomics data, including genome annotation, "linear" quantitative data, and genome interaction data. GIVE includes a graphical interface called HUG (HTML Universal Generator) that automatically generates HTML code for displaying user chosen data, which can be copy-pasted into user's personal website or saved and shared with collaborators. Long-Term Visual Object Tracking Benchmark
We propose a new long video dataset (called Track Long and Prosper - TLP) and
benchmark for single object tracking. The dataset consists of 50 HD videos from
real world scenarios, encompassing a duration of over 400 minutes (676K
frames), making it more than 20 folds larger in average duration per sequence
and more than 8 folds larger in terms of total covered duration, as compared to
existing generic datasets for visual tracking. The proposed dataset paves a way
to suitably assess long term tracking performance and train better deep
learning architectures (avoiding/reducing augmentation, which may not reflect
real world behaviour). We benchmark the dataset on 17 state of the art trackers
and rank them according to tracking accuracy and run time speeds. We further
present thorough qualitative and quantitative evaluation highlighting the
importance of long term aspect of tracking. Our most interesting observations
are (a) existing short sequence benchmarks fail to bring out the inherent
differences in tracking algorithms which widen up while tracking on long
sequences and (b) the accuracy of trackers abruptly drops on challenging long
sequences, suggesting the potential need of research efforts in the direction

Reduction of seafood processing wastewater using technologies enhanced by swim–bed technology
The increasing growth of the seafood processing industries considerably requires more industrial process activities and water consumption. It is estimated that approximately 10–40 m3 of wastewater is generated from those industries for processing one-tonne of raw materials. Due to limitations and regulations in natural resources utilization, a suitable and systematic wastewater treatment plant is very important to meet rigorous discharge standards. As a result of food waste biodegradability, the biological treatment and some extent of swim-bed technology, including a novel acryl-fibre (biofilm) material might be used effectively to meet the effluent discharge criteria.
