    Soybean yield, nutrient use efficiency, and economic returns of phosphorus and potassium in Ghana’s interior savanna

    IntroductionPhosphorus (P) and potassium (K) deficiencies are increasingly being reported in Ghana’s interior savanna soils. Smallholder farmers consider soybeans as a “zero-input” crop resulting in low yields and profitability. Studies indicate a positive response to P application; however, knowledge of the synergistic effect of P and K in soybeans is limited. A six-site year experiment was conducted to evaluate the synergy of P and K for soybean yield, partial factor productivity (PFP), agronomic efficiency (AE), rain-use efficiency (RUE), and variable-cost ratio (VCR).Materials and methodsThe treatments were 4 × 4 factorial combinations of P at 0, 25, 50, and 100 P2O5 (kg ha−1) and K at 0, 25, 50, and 100 K2O (kg ha−1), and their combinations laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The soybean cultivar “Favor” (TGx 1844–22E), released and registered by the Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI), was used as the test crop.Results and discussionFlowering time was reduced at Nyankpala and Dokpong by 0.2 and 0.4 (days), while plant height was increased by 4%–18% over control. Yield and RUE increased as P and K rates increased, with the greatest yield from T15 (P100K50) in Manga (2.34 t ha−1) and Nyankpala (2.37 t ha−1), T16 (P100K100) at Dokpong (2.68 t ha−1), and RUE from T15 across locations. The PFP, AE, and VCR values decreased with increasing P and K rates, with the greatest PFP, AE, and VCR from T5 (P25K0) at Manga and Dokpong and T2 (P0K25) at Nyankpala. All treatments exceeded the VCR > 2.0 threshold, except T12 (P50K100) across locations, and T16 at Manga and Nyankpala. The greatest economic returns are T5 at Manga and Dokpong and T2 at Nyankpala.ConclusionBy all indications, the study justified the use of nutrient input in soybeans of P and K to enhance grain yield and profitability. Avoiding broadcast applications and adopting precision placement using the 4R nutrient principles of right placement, right fertilizer source, right rate, and the right time is key. The study recommends further experiments on different combinations of P and K in a long-term residual study

    Socializing One Health: an innovative strategy to investigate social and behavioral risks of emerging viral threats

    In an effort to strengthen global capacity to prevent, detect, and control infectious diseases in animals and people, the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Emerging Pandemic Threats (EPT) PREDICT project funded development of regional, national, and local One Health capacities for early disease detection, rapid response, disease control, and risk reduction. From the outset, the EPT approach was inclusive of social science research methods designed to understand the contexts and behaviors of communities living and working at human-animal-environment interfaces considered high-risk for virus emergence. Using qualitative and quantitative approaches, PREDICT behavioral research aimed to identify and assess a range of socio-cultural behaviors that could be influential in zoonotic disease emergence, amplification, and transmission. This broad approach to behavioral risk characterization enabled us to identify and characterize human activities that could be linked to the transmission dynamics of new and emerging viruses. This paper provides a discussion of implementation of a social science approach within a zoonotic surveillance framework. We conducted in-depth ethnographic interviews and focus groups to better understand the individual- and community-level knowledge, attitudes, and practices that potentially put participants at risk for zoonotic disease transmission from the animals they live and work with, across 6 interface domains. When we asked highly-exposed individuals (ie. bushmeat hunters, wildlife or guano farmers) about the risk they perceived in their occupational activities, most did not perceive it to be risky, whether because it was normalized by years (or generations) of doing such an activity, or due to lack of information about potential risks. Integrating the social sciences allows investigations of the specific human activities that are hypothesized to drive disease emergence, amplification, and transmission, in order to better substantiate behavioral disease drivers, along with the social dimensions of infection and transmission dynamics. Understanding these dynamics is critical to achieving health security--the protection from threats to health-- which requires investments in both collective and individual health security. Involving behavioral sciences into zoonotic disease surveillance allowed us to push toward fuller community integration and engagement and toward dialogue and implementation of recommendations for disease prevention and improved health security

    Protein-Ligand Blind Docking Using QuickVina-W With Inter-Process Spatio-Temporal Integration

    Abstract “Virtual Screening” is a common step of in silico drug design, where researchers screen a large library of small molecules (ligands) for interesting hits, in a process known as “Docking”. However, docking is a computationally intensive and time-consuming process, usually restricted to small size binding sites (pockets) and small number of interacting residues. When the target site is not known (blind docking), researchers split the docking box into multiple boxes, or repeat the search several times using different seeds, and then merge the results manually. Otherwise, the search time becomes impractically long. In this research, we studied the relation between the search progression and Average Sum of Proximity relative Frequencies (ASoF) of searching threads, which is closely related to the search speed and accuracy. A new inter-process spatio-temporal integration method is employed in Quick Vina 2, resulting in a new docking tool, QuickVina-W, a suitable tool for “blind docking”, (not limited in search space size or number of residues). QuickVina-W is faster than Quick Vina 2, yet better than AutoDock Vina. It should allow researchers to screen huge ligand libraries virtually, in practically short time and with high accuracy without the need to define a target pocket beforehand

    Prevalence and adverse obstetric outcomes of female genital mutilation among women in rural Northern Ghana

    Abstract Background Female genital mutilation (FGM) is commonly practiced in sub-Saharan Africa and results in adverse pregnancy outcomes among affected women. This paper assessed the prevalence and effects of FGM on pregnancy outcomes in a rural Ghanaian setting. Methods We analyzed 9306 delivery records between 2003 and 2013 from the Navrongo War Memorial Hospital. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to determine the effects of FGM on pregnancy outcomes such as stillbirth, birth weight, postpartum haemorrhage, caesarean and instrumental delivery. We also assessed differences in the duration of stay in the hospital by FGM status. Results A greater proportion of mothers with FGM (24.7%) were older than 35 years compared with those without FGM (7.6%). FGM declined progressively from 28.4% in 2003 to 0.6% in 2013. Mothers with FGM were nearly twice as likely to have caesarean delivery (adjusted odds ratios = 1.85 with 95%CI [1.72, 1.99]) and stillbirths (1.60 [1.21, 2.11]) compared with those without. Similarly, they had a 4-fold increased risk of post-partum haemorrhage (4.69 [3.74, 5.88]) and more than 2-fold risk lacerations/episiotomy (2.57 [1.86, 3.21]) during delivery. Average duration of stay in the hospital was higher for mothers with FGM from 2003 to 2007. Conclusions Despite significant decline in prevalence of FGM, adverse obstetric outcomes are still high among affected women. Increased public health education of circumcised women on these outcomes would help improve institutional deliveries and heighten awareness and prompt clinical decisions among healthcare workers. Further scale-up of community level interventions are required to completely eliminate FGM. </jats:sec

    Exploring Flexibility of Progesterone Receptor Ligand Binding Domain Using Molecular Dynamics

    Progesterone receptor (PR), a member of nuclear receptor (NR) superfamily, plays a vital role for female reproductive tissue development, differentiation and maintenance. PR ligand, such as progesterone, induces conformation changes in PR ligand binding domain (LBD), thus mediates subsequent gene regulation cascades. PR LBD may adopt different conformations upon an agonist or an antagonist binding. These different conformations would trigger distinct transcription events. Therefore, the dynamics of PR LBD would be of general interest to biologists for a deep understanding of its structure-function relationship. However, no apo-form (non-ligand bound) of PR LBD model has been proposed either by experiments or computational methods so far. In this study, we explored the structural dynamics of PR LBD using molecular dynamics simulations and advanced sampling tools in both ligand-bound and the apo-forms. Resolved by the simulation study, helix 11, helix 12 and loop 895-908 (the loop between these two helices) are quite flexible in antagonistic conformation. Several residues, such as Arg899 and Glu723, could form salt-bridging interaction between helix 11 and helix 3, and are important for the PR LBD dynamics. And we also propose that helix 12 in apo-form PR LBD, not like other NR LBDs, such as human estrogen receptor α (ERα) LBD, may not adopt a totally extended conformation. With the aid of umbrella sampling and metadynamics simulations, several stable conformations of apo-form PR LBD have been sampled, which may work as critical structural models for further large scale virtual screening study to discover novel PR ligands for therapeutic application
