A universal characterization of nonlinear self-oscillation and chaos in various particle-wave-wall interactions

    Get PDF
The comprehensive parameter space of self-oscillation and its period-doubling route to chaos are shown for bounded beam-plasma systems. In this parametrization, it is helpful to use a potentially universal parameter in close analogy with free-electron-laser chaos. A common parameter, which is related to the velocity slippage and the ratio of bounce to oscillation frequencies, is shown to have similar significance for different physical systems. This single parameter replaces the dependences on many input parameters, thus suitable for a simplifying and diagnostic measure of nonlinear dynamical and chaotic phenomena for various systems of particle-wave interactions. The results of independent kinetic simulations verify those of nonlinear fluid simulations.open9

Electromagnetic fields in a 3D cavity and in a waveguide with oscillating walls

    Get PDF
We consider classical and quantum electromagnetic fields in a three-dimensional (3D) cavity and in a waveguide with oscillating boundaries of the frequency Ω\Omega . The photons created by the parametric resonance are distributed in the wave number space around Ω/2\Omega/2 along the axis of the oscillation. When classical waves propagate along the waveguide in the one direction, we observe the amplification of the original waves and another wave generation in the opposite direction by the oscillation of side walls. This can be understood as the classical counterpart of the photon production. In the case of two opposite walls oscillating with the same frequency but with a phase difference, the interferences are shown to occur due to the phase difference in the photon numbers and in the intensity of the generated waves.Comment: 8 pages revTeX including 1 eps fi

Mesurement of the B0 - anti-B0 Mixing Parameter Delta m_d using Semileptonic B0 Decays

We present a measurement of the B^0-B^0bar mixing parameter Delta m_d using neutral B meson pairs in a 29.1 fb^{-1} data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We exclusively reconstruct one neutral B meson in the semileptonic B^0 \to D^{*-}\ell^+\nu decay mode and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from its decay products. From the distribution of the time intervals between the two flavor-tagged B meson decay points, we obtain Delta m_d = (0.494 +- 0.012 +- 0.015) ps^{-1}, where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, Published in Phys.Rev.Lett. 89, 251803 (2002

An Upper Bound on the Decay tau -> mu gamma from Belle

We have performed a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay tau -> mu gamma using a data sample of 86.3fb^{-1} accumulated by the Belle detector at KEK. No evidence for a signal is seen, and we set an upper limit for the branching fraction of B(tau -> mu gamma) < 3.1 x 10^{-7} at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figuresm, submitted to Phys. Spectral Correlation in Incommensurate Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We investigate the energy spectra of clean incommensurate double-walled carbon nanotubes, and find that the overall spectral properties are described by the so-called critical statistics of Anderson metal-insulator transition. In the energy spectra, there exist three different regimes characterized by Wigner-Dyson, Poisson, and semi-Poisson distributions. This feature implies that the electron transport in incommensurate multi-walled nanotubes can be either diffusive, ballistic, or intermediate between them, depending on the position of the Fermi energy.Comment: final version to appear in Phys. Observation of Ds+ K- and evidence for Ds+ pi- final states in neutral B decays

We report the first observation of a B meson decay that is not accessible by a direct spectator process. The channel B0bar -> Ds+ K- is found in a sample of 85 timse 10^6 B Bbar events, collected with the Belle detector at KEKB, with a branching fraction Br(B0bar -> Ds+ K-)=(4.6^{+1.2}_{-1.1} +- 1.3) times 10^{-5}. We also obtain evidence for the B0 -> Ds+ pi- decay with branching fraction Br(B0 -> Ds+ pi-)=(2.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8} +- 0.7) times 10^{-5}. This value may be used to extract a model-dependent value of |Vub|.Comment: Accepted to publication in Phys. Rev. Let

    Observation of BK+B \to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-

We report the first observation of the flavor-changing neutral current decay BK+B \to K^* \ell^+ \ell^- and an improved measurement of the decay BK+B \to K \ell^+ \ell^-, where \ell represents an electron or a muon, with a data sample of 140 fb1{}^{-1} accumulated at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. The results for the branching fractions are B(BK+)=(11.52.4+2.6±0.8±0.2)×107{\cal B}(B \to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-)=(11.5^{+2.6}_{-2.4} \pm 0.8 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-7} and B(BK+)=(4.80.9+1.0±0.3±0.1)×107{\cal B}(B \to K \ell^+ \ell^-)=(4.8^{+1.0}_{-0.9} \pm 0.3 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{-7}, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is from model dependence.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PR

A Measurement of the Branching Fraction for the Inclusive B --> X(s) gamma Decays with the Belle Detector

We have measured the branching fraction of the inclusive radiative B meson decay B --> X(s) gamma to be Br(B->X(s)gamma)=(3.36 +/- 0.53(stat) +/- 0.42(sys) +0.50-0.54(th)) x 10^{-4}. The result is based on a sample of 6.07 x 10^6 BBbar events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^- storage ring.Comment: 14 pages, 6 Postsript figures, uses elsart.cl

Measurement of B0d - B0d-bar mixing rate from the time evolution of dilepton events at the Upsilon(4S)

We report a determination of the B0d - B0d-bar mixing parameter Delta-m_d based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The measurement is based on a 5.9 /fb data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing Delta-m_d as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain Delta-m_d = 0.463 +- 0.008(stat.) +- 0.016(sys.) ps^{-1} This is the first determination of Delta-m_d from time evolution measurements at the Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

Measurement of the CP Violation Parameter sin(2phi_1) in B^0_d Meson Decays

    Get PDF
We present a measurement of the Standard Model CP violation parameter sin(2phi_1) based on a 10.5 fb^{-1} data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e- collider. One neutral B meson is reconstructed in the J/psi K_S, psi(2S) K_S, chi_{c1} K_S, eta_c K_S, J/psi K_L or J/psi pi^0 CP-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its charged particle decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between the two B-meson decay points, we determine sin(2phi_1) = 0.58 +0.32-0.34 (stat) +0.09-0.10 (syst).Comment: LaTex, 13 pages, 3 figures, submitted to P.R.
