Monopoles and Knots in Skyrme Theory
We show that the Skyrme theory actually is a theory of monopoles which allows
a new type of solitons, the topological knots made of monopole-anti-monopole
pair, which is different from the well-known skyrmions. Furthermore, we derive a
generalized Skyrme action from the Yang-Mills action of QCD, which we propose
to be an effective action of QCD in the infra-red limit. We discuss the
physical implications of our results.Comment: 4 pages. Phys. Rev. Lett. in pres
Chemical network problems solved on NASA/Goddard's massively parallel processor computer
The single instruction stream, multiple data stream Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) unit consists of 16,384 bit serial arithmetic processors configured as a 128 x 128 array whose speed can exceed that of current supercomputers (Cyber 205). The applicability of the MPP for solving reaction network problems is presented and discussed, including the mapping of the calculation to the architecture, and CPU timing comparisons
Abelian Dominance in Wilson Loops
It has been conjectured that the Abelian projection of QCD is responsible for
the confinement of color. Using a gauge independent definition of the Abelian
projection which does {\it not} employ any gauge fixing, we provide a strong
evidence for the Abelian dominance in Wilson loop integral. In specific we
prove that the gauge potential which contributes to the Wilson loop integral is
precisely the one restricted by the Abelian projection.Comment: 4 pages, no figure, revtex. Phys. Rev. D in pres
Color Reflection Invariance and Monopole Condensation in QCD
We review the quantum instability of the Savvidy-Nielsen-Olesen (SNO) vacuum
of the one-loop effective action of SU(2) QCD, and point out a critical defect
in the calculation of the functional determinant of the gluon loop in the SNO
effective action. We prove that the gauge invariance, in particular the color
reflection invariance, exclude the unstable tachyonic modes from the gluon loop
integral. This guarantees the stability of the magnetic condensation in QCD.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures, JHEP styl
Dynamics of tilt-based browsing on mobile devices
A tilt-controlled photo browsing method for small mobile devices is presented. The implementation uses continuous inputs from an accelerometer, and a multimodal (visual, audio and vibrotactile) display coupled with the states of this model. The model is based on a simple physical model, with its characteristics shaped to enhance usability. We show how the dynamics of the physical model can be shaped to make the handling qualities of the mobile device fit the browsing task. We implemented the proposed algorithm on Samsung MITs PDA with tri-axis accelerometer and a vibrotactile motor. The experiment used seven novice users browsing from 100 photos. We compare a tilt-based interaction method with a button-based browser and an iPod wheel. We discuss the usability performance and contrast this with subjective experience from the users. The iPod wheel has significantly poorer performance than button pushing or tilt interaction, despite its commercial popularity
Discontinuous percolation transitions in real physical systems
We study discontinuous percolation transitions (PT) in the diffusion-limited
cluster aggregation model of the sol-gel transition as an example of real
physical systems, in which the number of aggregation events is regarded as the
number of bonds occupied in the system. When particles are Brownian, in which
cluster velocity depends on cluster size as with
, a larger cluster has less probability to collide with other
clusters because of its smaller mobility. Thus, the cluster is effectively more
suppressed in growth of its size. Then the giant cluster size increases
drastically by merging those suppressed clusters near the percolation
threshold, exhibiting a discontinuous PT. We also study the tricritical
behavior by controlling the parameter , and the tricritical point is
determined by introducing an asymmetric Smoluchowski equation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
A-site driven ferroelectricity in strained ferromagnetic L2NiMnO6 thin films
We report on theoretical and experimental investigation of A-site driven
ferroelectricity in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 thin films grown on SrTiO3
substrates. Structural analysis and density functional theory calculations show
that epitaxial strain stretches the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6 crystal lattice
along the [111]cubic direction, triggering a displacement of the A-site La ions
in the double perovskite lattice. The lattice distortion and the A-site
displacements stabilize a ferroelectric polar state in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6
crystals. The ferroelectric state only appears in the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6
phase, where MnO6 and NiO6 octahedral tilting is inhibited by the 3-fold
crystal symmetry. Electron localization mapping showed that covalent bonding
with oxygen and 6s orbital lone pair formation are negligible in this material.Comment: in pres
Neutron scattering study of novel magnetic order in Na0.5CoO2
We report polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering measurements of the
magnetic order in single crystals of Na0.5CoO2. Our data indicate that below
T_N=88 K the spins form a novel antiferromagnetic pattern within the CoO2
planes, consisting of alternating rows of ordered and non-ordered Co ions. The
domains of magnetic order are closely coupled to the domains of Na ion order,
consistent with such a two-fold symmetric spin arrangement. Magnetoresistance
and anisotropic susceptibility measurements further support this model for the
electronic ground state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Anisotropic resistivity of NaFeCoAs
Temperature-dependent resistivity is studied in single crystals of
iron-arsenide superconductor NaFeCoAs for electrical
current directions along, , and transverse, , to the
Fe-As layers. Doping with Co increases stability of this compound to reaction
with the environment and suppresses numerous features in both and
compared to the stoichiometric NaFeAs. Evolution of
with follows a universal trend observed in other pnictide superconductors,
exhibiting a -linear temperature dependence close to the optimal doping and
development of dependence upon further doping. in parent
compound shows a non - monotonic behavior with a crossover from non-metallic
resistivity increase on cooling from room temperature down to 80 K to a
metallic decrease below this temperature. Both and
show several correlated crossover - like features at 80 K. Despite a
general trend towards more metallic behavior of inter - plane resistivity in
Co-doped samples, the temperature of the crossover from insulating to metallic
behavior (80 K) does not change much with doping
