Slower Rise and Smaller Peak Level of Blood Glucose in Healthy Young Male Adults Pre-Fed Moringa Oleifera Seed Powder
Ingestion of food with high glycaemic index is known to stress the insulin release mechanism that can produce Insulin resistance and eventually Diabetes Mellitus. How fast the end product of digestion of carbohydrate glucose surges into the bloodstream and the peak level attained are equally important for the glucose control mechanism of the body and ultimately the health of the individual involved. This study aims at exploring the effect of Moringa oleifera seed on the post-prandial rate of absorption of glucose and the peak glucose level attainable. Five healthy young male adult (18-35) volunteers had their Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) conducted the first day as a control group followed the next day by a second OGTT with a pre-treatment with Moringa oleifera seed powder in a fix dose of 0.0175 gram per Kilogram body weight as the test/case group. The results indicate that it takes 60 minutes for the blood glucose to reach the peak concentration of 118.6 mg/dl in treatment group as against 30 minutes in the control group reaching 135mg/dl optimal concentration. The difference in this concentration and rate of surge are significant (p<0.05) A slower rise and a smaller optimal concentration of glucose are demonstrated as response to Moringa oleifera powder ingestion, a potentially clear beneficial effect. Evidence for direct CP violation in B-0 -> K+pi(-) decays
We report evidence for direct CP violation in the decay B-0-->K(+)pi(-) with 253 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. Using 275x10(6) B(B) over bar pairs we observe a B-->K(+/-)pi(-/+) signal with 2140+/-53 events. The measured CP violating asymmetry is A(CP)(K(+)pi(-))=-0.101+/-0.025(stat)+/-0.005(syst), corresponding to a significance of 3.9sigma including systematics. We also search for CP violation in the decays B+-->K(+)pi(0) and B+-->pi(+)pi(0). The measured CP violating asymmetries are A(CP)(K(+)pi(0))=0.04+/-0.05(stat)+/-0.02(syst) and A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))=-0.02+/-0.10(stat)+/-0.01(syst), corresponding to the intervals -0.05< A(CP)(K(+)pi(0))<0.13 and -0.18< A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))<0.14 at 90% confidence level
Measurements of B decays to two kaons
We report measurements of B meson decays to two kaons using 253 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find evidence for signals in B+->(K) over bar K-0(+) and B-0-> K-0(K) over bar (0) with significances of 3.0 sigma and 3.5 sigma, respectively. (Charge-conjugate modes are included.) The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be B(B+->(K) over bar K-0(+))=(1.0 +/- 0.4 +/- 0.1)x10(-6) and B(B-0-> K-0(K) over bar (0))=(0.8 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.1)x10(-6). These decay modes are examples of hadronic b -> d transitions. No signal is observed in the decay B-0-> K+K-, and we set an upper limit of 3.7x10(-7) at 90% confidence level
Glutathione Restores the Mechanism of Synaptic Plasticity in Aged Mice to That of the Adult
Glutathione (GSH), the major endogenous antioxidant produced by cells, can modulate the activity of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) through its reducing functions. During aging, an increase in oxidative stress leads to decreased levels of GSH in the brain. Concurrently, aging is characterized by calcium dysregulation, thought to underlie impairments in hippocampal NMDAR-dependent long-term potentiation (LTP), a form of synaptic plasticity thought to represent a cellular model for memory
Urinary bisphenol A concentrations in girls from rural and urban Egypt: a pilot study
Abstract
Background
Exposure to endocrine active compounds, including bisphenol A (BPA), remains poorly characterized in developing countries despite the fact that behavioral practices related to westernization have the potential to influence exposure. BPA is a high production volume chemical that has been associated with metabolic dysfunction as well as behavioral and developmental effects in people, including children. In this pilot study, we evaluate BPA exposure and assess likely pathways of exposure among girls from urban and rural Egypt.
Methods
We measured urinary concentrations of total (free plus conjugated) species of BPA in spot samples in urban (N = 30) and rural (N = 30) Egyptian girls, and compared these concentrations to preexisting data from age-matched American girls (N = 47) from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We also collected anthropometric and questionnaire data regarding food storage behaviors to assess potential routes of exposure.
Results
Urban and rural Egyptian girls exhibited similar concentrations of urinary total BPA, with median unadjusted values of 1.00 and 0.60 ng/mL, respectively. Concentrations of urinary BPA in this group of Egyptian girls (median unadjusted: 0.70 ng/mL) were significantly lower compared to age-matched American girls (median unadjusted: 2.60 ng/mL) according to NHANES 2009-2010 data. Reported storage of food in plastic containers was a significant predictor of increasing concentrations of urinary BPA.
Conclusions
Despite the relatively low urinary BPA concentrations within this Egyptian cohort, the significant association between food storage behaviors and increasing urinary BPA concentration highlights the need to understand food and consumer product patterns that may be closing the gap between urban and rural lifestyles.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/112495/1/12940_2011_Article_523.pd
Pan-cancer analysis of whole genomes
Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale(1-3). Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4-5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter(4); identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation(5,6); analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution(7); describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity(8,9); and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes(8,10-18).Peer reviewe
Monitoring and data quality assessment of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter
The liquid argon calorimeter is a key component of the ATLAS detector installed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The primary purpose of this calorimeter is the measurement of electron and photon kinematic properties. It also provides a crucial input for measuring jets and missing transverse momentum. An advanced data monitoring procedure was designed to quickly identify issues that would affect detector performance and ensure that only the best quality data are used for physics analysis. This article presents the validation procedure developed during the 2011 and 2012 LHC data-taking periods, in which more than 98% of the proton-proton luminosity recorded by ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy of 7-8 TeV had calorimeter data quality suitable for physics analysis
Rutin administration attenuates myocardial dysfunction in diabetic rats
Oxidative stress plays a major role in diabetic cardiomyopathy pathogenesis. Anti-oxidant therapy has been investigated in preventing or treating several diabetic complications. However, anti-oxidant action on diabetic-induced cardiac remodeling is not completely clear. This study evaluated the effects of rutin, a flavonoid, on cardiac and myocardial function in diabetic rats. Wistar rats were assigned into control (C, n = 14); control-rutin (C-R, n = 14); diabetes mellitus (DM, n = 16); and DM-rutin (DM-R, n = 16) groups. Seven days after inducing diabetes (streptozotocin, 60 mg/kg, i.p.), rutin was injected intraperitoneally once a week (50 mg/kg) for 7 weeks. Echocardiogram was performed and myocardial function assessed in left ventricular (LV) papillary muscles. Serum insulin concentration was measured by ELISA. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test. Glycemia was higher in DM than DM-R and C and in DM-R than C-R. Insulin concentration was lower in diabetic groups than controls (C 2.45 ± 0.67; C-R 2.09 ± 0.52; DM 0.59 ± 0.18; DM-R 0.82 ± 0.21 ng/mL). Echocardiogram showed no differences between C-R and C. DM had increased LV systolic diameter compared to C, and increased left atrium diameter/body weight (BW) ratio and LV mass/BW ratio compared to C and DM-R. Septal wall thickness, LV diastolic diameter/BW ratio, and relative wall thickness were lower in DM-R than DM. Fractional shortening and posterior wall shortening velocity were lower in DM than C and DM-R. In papillary muscle preparation, DM and DM-R presented higher time to peak tension and time from peak tension to 50% relaxation than controls; time to peak tension was lower in DM-R than DM. Under 0.625 and 1.25 mM extracellular calcium concentrations, DM had higher developed tension than C. Rutin attenuates cardiac remodeling and left ventricular and myocardial dysfunction caused by streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa da UNESP (PROPe)Departamento de Medicina Interna, Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu (FMB), Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Botucatu, SP, BrasilDepartamento de Química e Bioquímica, Instituto de Biociências de Botucatu (IBB), Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Botucatu, SP, BrasilDepartamento de Clínica Médica, Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu (FMB), Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Botucatu, SP, BrasilUniversidade Estadual Paulista, Departamento de Clínica Médica, Faculdade de Medicina de BotucatuUniversidade Estadual Paulista, Departamento de Química e Bioquímica, Instituto de Biociências de BotucatuCNPq: 306845/2012-1CNPq: 306857/2012-0)FAPESP: 2009/54506-

Observation of a near-threshold D-0(D)over-bar(0)pi(0) enhancement in B -> D-0(D)over-bar(0)pi K-0 decay
We report the first observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the (DD0)-D-0 pi(0) system from B ->(DD0)-D-0 pi K-0 decays using a 414 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. The enhancement peaks at a mass M=3875.2 +/- 0.7(-1.6)(+0.3)+/- 0.8 MeV/c(2) and the branching fraction for events in the peak is B(B ->(DD0)-D-0 pi K-0)=(1.22 +/- 0.31(+0.23)(-0.30)) x 10(-4). The data were collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider
