Nematode movement along a chemical gradient in a structurally heterogeneous environment : 2. Theory
L'influence de l'hétérogénéité sur la diffusion chimique et le déplacement des nématodes est étudiée par le biais d'un modèle théorique. Ce modèle prend en compte trois facteurs influant sur le déplacement des nématodes : la structure du sol, la stratégie de recherche de nourriture et la chémotaxie. Utilisant un modèle continu, nous avons mis au point un système discret permettant de simuler les traces des nématodes dans chacune des quatre situations définies par Anderson et al. (1997). Nous avons montré que l'hétérogénéité structurale provoque aussi bien des taux variables de concentrations du composé attractif dans des aires réduites que la reconnaissance de ce composé. L'hétérogénéité structurale du sol limite également la stratégie de recherche de nourriture du nématode lequel adopte alors une stratégie permettant d'éviter les pièges structuraux. Host plant recognition by the root feeding clover weevil, Sitona lepidus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)
This study investigated the ability of neonatal larvae of the root-feeding weevil, Sitona lepidus Gyllenhal, to locate white clover Trifolium repens L. (Fabaceae) roots growing in soil and to distinguish them from the roots of other species of clover and a co-occurring grass species. Choice experiments used a combination of invasive techniques and the novel technique of high resolution X-ray microtomography to non-invasively track larval movement in the soil towards plant roots. Burrowing distances towards roots of different plant species were also examined. Newly hatched S. lepidus recognized T. repens roots and moved preferentially towards them when given a choice of roots of subterranean clover, Trifolium subterraneum L. (Fabaceae), strawberry clover Trifolium fragiferum L. (Fabaceae), or perennial ryegrass Lolium perenneL. (Poaceae). Larvae recognized T. repens roots, whether released in groups of five or singly, when released 25 mm (meso-scale recognition) or 60 mm (macro-scale recognition) away from plant roots. L'interaction entre l'hétérogénéité structurale et les gradients chimiques, ainsi que leur influence sur le déplacement des nématodes, ont été étudiées. Trois dispositifs expérimentaux ont été utilisés qui comprennent un nématode (#Caenorhabditis elegans) placé sur une couche homogène de milieu nutritif gélosé dans une boîte de Petri avec ou sans présence d'une source bactérienne de nourriture (#Escherichia coli) utilisée comme attractif. L'hétérogénéité structurale est réalisée en ajoutant des grains de sable en une seule épaisseur dans chacun des traitements homologues. Toutes les traces ont été relevées à l'aide d'un dispositif de vidéo à séquences temporelles et les données digitalisées avant analyse. Les répartitions des angles de changement de direction et les dimensions fractales des traces sont calculées pour chaque traitement. Il se révèle un effet statistiquement significatif (P inférieur ou égal à 0,01) de tous les traitements sur le déplacement des nématodes. En présence d'un produit attractif, le déplacement du nématode est plus linéaire et dirigé vers la source bactérienne. L'hétérogénéité structurale provoque un déplacement plus linéaire que dans le cas d'un milieu homogène. La dimension fractale des traces du nématode est significativement (P inférieur ou égal à 0,01) plus élevée pour les traitements sans sable ni bactéries que pour les autres traitements. Ces résultats permettent, pour la première fois, de quantifier le degré auquel les nématodes utilisent un comportement de recherche de nourriture au hasard dans un milieu homogène et adoptent un déplacement mieux orienté en présence d'un produit attractif. Finalement, lorsqu'une hétérogénéité est présente, la stratégie de recherche de nourriture devient plutôt une stratégie d'évitement permettant au nématode d'échapper aux "pièges" structuraux, tels les pores en cul-de-sac, et de pouvoir ainsi continuer à réagir à l'attraction. Theorising Disability: Beyond Common Sense
This article seeks to introduce the topic of disability to political theory via a discussion of some of the literature produced by disability theorists. The author argues that these more radical approaches conceptualise disability in ways that conflict with ‘common-sense’ notions of disability that tend to underpin political theoretical considerations of the topic. Furthermore, the author suggests that these more radical conceptualisations have profound implications for current debates on social justice, equality and citizenship that highlight the extent to which these notions are also currently underpinned by ‘common-sense’ notions of ‘normality’
Machine planning in a product model environment
The aim of this research was to understand and solve problems associated with the
integration of a Machine Planner within a product model environment. This work
was carried out in conjunction with other researchers, pursuing parallel integration
issues related to pre-production proving and product data representation.
Product data representations of component level planned, processes and feature
level process data have been explored as sub-sets of -a product data model to aid
integration. Geometric queries on a cell decomposition solid, model. have been
explored as a means of providing feature geometric interaction data, while the
dimensional interactions between features have also been addressed.
Product data representations have been modelled using a prototype software tool, providing an environment for the exploration of the integration of a Machine Planner using a feature based design approach. Necessary Machine Planning functions have been implemented, using the ADA programming language, to explore the integrating capability of the product model environment, concentrating on the
use of a prismatic benchmark component. Using the experimental implementation,
setup and operation plans have been produced and machining part programs generated
from product model representations of variants on the benchmark component. These have been successfully machined using a3 axis vertical machining centre. Such experiments, as well as others in conjunction with co-researchers, have shown
that a product data model can provide a common base of data for the integration of
a range of design and manufacturing activities
Photonic realization of the relativistic Kronig-Penney model and relativistic Tamm surface states
Photonic analogues of the relativistic Kronig-Penney model and of
relativistic surface Tamm states are proposed for light propagation in fibre
Bragg gratings (FBGs) with phase defects. A periodic sequence of phase slips in
the FBG realizes the relativistic Kronig-Penney model, the band structure of
which being mapped into the spectral response of the FBG. For the semi-infinite
FBG Tamm surface states can appear and can be visualized as narrow resonance
peaks in the transmission spectrum of the grating
Hexatic-Herringbone Coupling at the Hexatic Transition in Smectic Liquid Crystals: 4- Renormalization Group Calculations Revisited
Simple symmetry considerations would suggest that the transition from the
smectic-A phase to the long-range bond orientationally ordered hexatic
smectic-B phase should belong to the XY universality class. However, a number
of experimental studies have constantly reported over the past twenty years
"novel" critical behavior with non-XY critical exponents for this transition.
Bruinsma and Aeppli argued in Physical Review Letters {\bf 48}, 1625 (1982),
using a renormalization-group calculation, that short-range
molecular herringbone correlations coupled to the hexatic ordering drive this
transition first order via thermal fluctuations, and that the critical behavior
observed in real systems is controlled by a `nearby' tricritical point. We have
revisited the model of Bruinsma and Aeppli and present here the results of our
study. We have found two nontrivial strongly-coupled herringbone-hexatic fixed
points apparently missed by those authors. Yet, those two new nontrivial
fixed-points are unstable, and we obtain the same final conclusion as the one
reached by Bruinsma and Aeppli, namely that of a fluctuation-driven first order
transition. We also discuss the effect of local two-fold distortion of the bond

Sporting embodiment: sports studies and the (continuing) promise of phenomenology
Whilst in recent years sports studies have addressed the calls ‘to bring the body back in’ to theorisations of sport and physical activity, the ‘promise of phenomenology’ remains largely under-realised with regard to sporting embodiment. Relatively few accounts are grounded in the ‘flesh’ of the lived sporting body, and phenomenology offers a powerful framework for such analysis. A wide-ranging, multi-stranded, and interpretatively contested perspective, phenomenology in general has been taken up and utilised in very different ways within different disciplinary fields. The purpose of this article is to consider some selected phenomenological threads, key qualities of the phenomenological method, and the potential for existentialist phenomenology in particular to contribute fresh perspectives to the sociological study of embodiment in sport and exercise. It offers one way to convey the ‘essences’, corporeal immediacy and textured sensuosity of the lived sporting body. The use of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) is also critically addressed.

Fluctuation Relations for Diffusion Processes
The paper presents a unified approach to different fluctuation relations for
classical nonequilibrium dynamics described by diffusion processes. Such
relations compare the statistics of fluctuations of the entropy production or
work in the original process to the similar statistics in the time-reversed
process. The origin of a variety of fluctuation relations is traced to the use
of different time reversals. It is also shown how the application of the
presented approach to the tangent process describing the joint evolution of
infinitesimally close trajectories of the original process leads to a
multiplicative extension of the fluctuation relations.Comment: 38 page
Reference ontologies for interoperability across multiple assembly systems
The role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is crucial for future manufacturing organisations in order
to support effective collaboration and information sharing. However, the contemporary ICT-based systems lack the
required ability to adequately support interoperability across multiple domain systems. The capability of such ICT-based
systems to interoperate is impeded by the semantic conflicts arising from loosely defined meanings and intents of the
participating system concepts. The aim of this paper is to investigate the interoperability of assembly systems at multiple
levels of concept specialisations using the concept of a formal reference ontology. Formal ontologies are providing a
promising way to computationally capture the domain meanings which can subsequently provide a base to support
interoperability across multiple systems and in our case multiple assembly systems. This paper takes the example of
manufacturing bill of materials concept and three different domain-specific interpretations to explore and demonstrate the
potential of formal reference ontologies to support interoperability
