    Poster PresentationPurpose Previous study demonstrated that administration of garlic-derived antioxidant S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC) ameliorated hepatic injury in a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) rat model. In the present study, we investigated the effect and mechanism of SAMC on NAFLD-induced cellular apoptosis in the liver. Methods Adult Sprague-Dawley female rats were fed with a diet comprising of highly unsaturated fat diet (30% fish oil) for 8 weeks to develop NAFLD with or without intraperitoneal injection of 200 mg/kg SAMC three times per week. After chemical euthanasia, liver samples were collected for histological, biochemical and molecular analyses. Results During NAFLD development, increased apoptotic cells were observed in the liver. Hepatic apoptosis was accompanied by activated intrinsic apoptotic pathway as shown by expressional changes of cytochrome c and Bcl-2 family genes. Extrinsic apoptotic pathway was also activated as shown by expressional changes of Fas, TRAIL, FADD and cleaved caspase-8. Increased activity of caspase-3 further confirmed the activation of apoptosis. In addition, reduced activity of LKB1/AMPK and PI3K/Akt pathways could be observed with increased expression of pro-apoptotic regulator p53 in NAFLD rats. Administration of SAMC reduced the number of apoptotic cells through down-regulation of both intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic mechanisms. Phosphorylation status of LKB1, AMPK, PI3K, and Akt were also restored by SAMC co-treatment, leading to the reduction of p53 expression. Conclusion Administration of SAMC during NAFLD development in rats protects liver from apoptosis through p53-dependent intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways.published_or_final_versio

    Directed differentiation of human bone marrow stromal cells to fate-committed Schwann cells

    Transplantation of oligodendrocyte precursors represents a potential therapy for myelin disorders but requires a safe and accessible cell source. Here we report the directed differentiation of neural progenitors derived from adult bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) into oligodendrocyte precursors for cell therapy purpose. Neural progenitors among BMSCs could be culture expanded in non-adherent sphere-forming conditions and directed to differentiate along the oligodendrocyte lineage. BMSC-derived oligodendrocyte precursors (BM-OPs) differentiated into myelin basic protein (MBP)-positive oligodendrocyte when co-cultured with purified dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. Injection of BM-OPs into the brain of myelin deficient Shiverer mice resulted in the generation of MBP-positive oligodendrocyte and compact myelin. Our results provided pointers to adult BMSCs as a readily accessible source of OPs towards cell therapy for myelin disorders.published_or_final_versio

    How people with dementia and their families decide about moving to a care home and support their needs: development of a decision aid, a qualitative study

    Get PDF
    yesBackground: People with dementia and their relatives find decisions about the person with dementia living in a care home difficult. Methods: We interviewed 20 people with dementia or family carers around the time of this decision in order to design a decision-aid. Results: Decision-makers balanced the competing priorities of remaining somewhere familiar, family’s wish they remain at home, reduction of risk and effects on carer’s and person with dementia’s physical health. The person with dementia frequently resented their lack of autonomy as decisions about care home moves were made after insight and judgment were impaired. Family consultation usually helped carers but sometimes exacerbated tensions. Direct professional support was appreciated where it was available. There is a need for healthcare professionals to facilitate these conversations around decision-making and to include more than signposting to other organisations. Conclusions: There is a need for a healthcare professional facilitated decision-aid. This should detail what might change for the person with dementia and their carer, possible resources and alternatives and assist in facilitating discussion with the wider family; further research will develop and test a tool to facilitate decision making about place of care needs

    Study of psi(2S) decays to X J/psi

    Full text link
    Using J/psi -> mu^+ mu^- decays from a sample of approximately 4 million psi(2S) events collected with the BESI detector, the branching fractions of psi(2S) -> eta J/psi, pi^0 pi^0 J/psi, and anything J/psi normalized to that of psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi are measured. The results are B(psi(2S) -> eta J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.098 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.010, B(psi(2S) -> pi^0 pi^0 J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.570 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.026, and B(psi(2S) -> anything J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 1.867 \pm 0.026 \pm 0.055.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

    First observation of psi(2S)-->K_S K_L

    Full text link
    The decay psi(2S)-->K_S K_L is observed for the first time using psi(2S) data collected with the Beijing Spectrometer (BESII) at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC); the branching ratio is determined to be B(psi(2S)-->K_S K_L) = (5.24\pm 0.47 \pm 0.48)\times 10^{-5}. Compared with J/psi-->K_S K_L, the psi(2S) branching ratio is enhanced relative to the prediction of the perturbative QCD ``12%'' rule. The result, together with the branching ratios of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs (\pi^+\pi^- and K^+K^-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Shot noise in mesoscopic systems

    Get PDF
    This is a review of shot noise, the time-dependent fluctuations in the electrical current due to the discreteness of the electron charge, in small conductors. The shot-noise power can be smaller than that of a Poisson process as a result of correlations in the electron transmission imposed by the Pauli principle. This suppression takes on simple universal values in a symmetric double-barrier junction (suppression factor 1/2), a disordered metal (factor 1/3), and a chaotic cavity (factor 1/4). Loss of phase coherence has no effect on this shot-noise suppression, while thermalization of the electrons due to electron-electron scattering increases the shot noise slightly. Sub-Poissonian shot noise has been observed experimentally. So far unobserved phenomena involve the interplay of shot noise with the Aharonov-Bohm effect, Andreev reflection, and the fractional quantum Hall effect.Comment: 37 pages, Latex, 10 figures (eps). Resonances in J/ψϕπ+πJ/\psi \to \phi \pi ^+\pi ^- and ϕK+K\phi K^+K^-

    Full text link
    A partial wave analysis is presented of J/ψϕπ+πJ/\psi \to \phi \pi ^+\pi ^- and ϕK+K\phi K^+K^- from a sample of 58M J/ψJ/\psi events in the BES II detector. The f0(980)f_0(980) is observed clearly in both sets of data, and parameters of the Flatt\' e formula are determined accurately: M=965±8M = 965 \pm 8 (stat) ±6\pm 6 (syst) MeV/c2^2, g1=165±10±15g_1 = 165 \pm 10 \pm 15 MeV/c2^2, g2/g1=4.21±0.25±0.21g_2/g_1 = 4.21 \pm 0.25 \pm 0.21. The ϕππ\phi \pi \pi data also exhibit a strong ππ\pi \pi peak centred at M=1335M = 1335 MeV/c2^2. It may be fitted with f2(1270)f_2(1270) and a dominant 0+0^+ signal made from f0(1370)f_0(1370) interfering with a smaller f0(1500)f_0(1500) component. There is evidence that the f0(1370)f_0(1370) signal is resonant, from interference with f2(1270)f_2(1270). There is also a state in ππ\pi \pi with M=179030+40M = 1790 ^{+40}_{-30} MeV/c2^2 and Γ=27030+60\Gamma = 270 ^{+60}_{-30} MeV/c2^2; spin 0 is preferred over spin 2. This state, f0(1790)f_0(1790), is distinct from f0(1710)f_0(1710). The ϕKKˉ\phi K\bar K data contain a strong peak due to f2(1525)f_2'(1525). A shoulder on its upper side may be fitted by interference between f0(1500)f_0(1500) and f0(1710)f_0(1710).Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Submitted to Phys. Lett.

    Full text link
    Using 58 million J/psi and 14 million psi' decays obtained by the BESII experiment, the branching fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0 is determined. The result is (2.10+/-0.12)X10^{-2}, which is significantly higher than previous measurements.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, RevTex

    Search for K_S K_L in psi'' decays

    Full text link
    K_S K_L from psi'' decays is searched for using the psi'' data collected by BESII at BEPC, the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be B(psi''--> K_S K_L) < 2.1\times 10^{-4} at 90% C. L. The measurement is compared with the prediction of the S- and D-wave mixing model of the charmonia, based on the measurements of the branching fractions of J/psi-->K_S K_L and psi'-->K_S K_L.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
