An Efficient Representation of Euclidean Gravity I
We explore how the topology of spacetime fabric is encoded into the local
structure of Riemannian metrics using the gauge theory formulation of Euclidean
gravity. In part I, we provide a rigorous mathematical foundation to prove that
a general Einstein manifold arises as the sum of SU(2)_L Yang-Mills instantons
and SU(2)_R anti-instantons where SU(2)_L and SU(2)_R are normal subgroups of
the four-dimensional Lorentz group Spin(4) = SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R. Our proof
relies only on the general properties in four dimensions: The Lorentz group
Spin(4) is isomorphic to SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R and the six-dimensional vector space
of two-forms splits canonically into the sum of three-dimensional vector spaces
of self-dual and anti-self-dual two-forms. Consolidating these two, it turns
out that the splitting of Spin(4) is deeply correlated with the decomposition
of two-forms on four-manifold which occupies a central position in the theory

An assessment of validity and responsiveness of generic measures of health-related quality of life in hearing impairment

author(s) and the source are credited.Purpose: This review examines psychometric performance of three widely used generic preference-based measures, that is, EuroQol 5 dimensions (EQ-5D), Health Utility Index 3 (HUI3) and Short-form 6 dimensions (SF-6D) in patients with hearing impairments.
Methods: A systematic search was undertaken to identify studies of patients with hearing impairments where health state utility values were measured and reported. Data were extracted and analysed to assess the reliability, validity (known group differences and convergent validity) and responsiveness of the measures across hearing impairments.
Results: Fourteen studies (18 papers) were included in the review. HUI3 was the most commonly used utility measures in hearing impairment. In all six studies, the HUI3 detected difference between groups defined by the severity of impairment, and four out of five studies detected statistically significant changes as a result of intervention. The only study available suggested that EQ-5D only had weak ability to discriminate difference between severity groups, and in four out of five studies, EQ-5D failed to detected changes. Only one study involved the SF-6D; thus, the information is too limited to conclude on its performance. Also evidence for the reliability of these measures was not found.
Conclusion: Overall, the validity and responsiveness of the HUI3 in hearing impairment was good. The responsiveness of EQ-5D was relatively poor and weak validity was suggested by limited evidence. The evidence on SF-6D was too limited to make any judgment. More head-to-head comparisons of these and other preference measures of health are required.Medical Research Counci
Identification of signaling pathways in early mammary gland development by mouse genetics
The mammary gland develops as an appendage of the ectoderm. The prenatal stage of mammary development is hormone independent and is regulated by sequential and reciprocal signaling between the epithelium and the mesenchyme. A number of recent studies using human and mouse genetics, in particular targeted gene deletion and transgenic expression, have identified some of the signals that control specific steps in development. This process involves cell specification and proliferation, reciprocal tissue interactions and cell migration. Since some of these events are recapitulated during tumorigenesis, an understanding of these signaling pathways may contribute to the development of targeted therapies and novel drugs
Classical conformal blocks from TBA for the elliptic Calogero-Moser system
The so-called Poghossian identities connecting the toric and spherical
blocks, the AGT relation on the torus and the Nekrasov-Shatashvili formula for
the elliptic Calogero-Moser Yang's (eCMY) functional are used to derive certain
expressions for the classical 4-point block on the sphere. The main motivation
for this line of research is the longstanding open problem of uniformization of
the 4-punctured Riemann sphere, where the 4-point classical block plays a
crucial role. It is found that the obtained representation for certain 4-point
classical blocks implies the relation between the accessory parameter of the
Fuchsian uniformization of the 4-punctured sphere and the eCMY functional.
Additionally, a relation between the 4-point classical block and the ,
twisted superpotential is found and further used to re-derive the
instanton sector of the Seiberg-Witten prepotential of the , supersymmetric gauge theory from the classical block.Comment: 25 pages, no figures, latex+JHEP3, published versio
Adaptive Evolutionary Clustering
In many practical applications of clustering, the objects to be clustered
evolve over time, and a clustering result is desired at each time step. In such
applications, evolutionary clustering typically outperforms traditional static
clustering by producing clustering results that reflect long-term trends while
being robust to short-term variations. Several evolutionary clustering
algorithms have recently been proposed, often by adding a temporal smoothness
penalty to the cost function of a static clustering method. In this paper, we
introduce a different approach to evolutionary clustering by accurately
tracking the time-varying proximities between objects followed by static
clustering. We present an evolutionary clustering framework that adaptively
estimates the optimal smoothing parameter using shrinkage estimation, a
statistical approach that improves a naive estimate using additional
information. The proposed framework can be used to extend a variety of static
clustering algorithms, including hierarchical, k-means, and spectral
clustering, into evolutionary clustering algorithms. Experiments on synthetic
and real data sets indicate that the proposed framework outperforms static

Quantum control of hybrid nuclear-electronic qubits
Pulsed magnetic resonance is a wide-reaching technology allowing the quantum
state of electronic and nuclear spins to be controlled on the timescale of
nanoseconds and microseconds respectively. The time required to flip either
dilute electronic or nuclear spins is orders of magnitude shorter than their
decoherence times, leading to several schemes for quantum information
processing with spin qubits. We investigate instead the novel regime where the
eigenstates approximate 50:50 superpositions of the electronic and nuclear spin
states forming "hybrid nuclear-electronic" qubits. Here we demonstrate quantum
control of these states for the first time, using bismuth-doped silicon, in
just 32 ns: this is orders of magnitude faster than previous experiments where
pure nuclear states were used. The coherence times of our states are five
orders of magnitude longer, reaching 4 ms, and are limited by the
naturally-occurring 29Si nuclear spin impurities. There is quantitative
agreement between our experiments and no-free-parameter analytical theory for
the resonance positions, as well as their relative intensities and relative
Rabi oscillation frequencies. In experiments where the slow manipulation of
some of the qubits is the rate limiting step, quantum computations would

Barnyard grasses were processed with rice around 10000 years ago
Rice (Oryza sativa) is regarded as the only grass that was selected for cultivation and eventual domestication in the Yangtze basin of China. Although both macro-fossils and micro-fossils of rice have been recovered from the Early Neolithic site of Shangshan, dating to more than 10,000 years before present (BP), we report evidence of phytolith and starch microfossils taken from stone tools, both for grinding and cutting, and cultural layers, that indicating barnyard grass (Echinochloa spp.) was a major subsistence resource, alongside smaller quantities of acorn starches (Lithocarpus/Quercus sensu lato) and water chestnuts (Trapa). This evidence suggests that early managed wetland environments were initially harvested for multiple grain species including barnyard grasses as well as rice, and indicate that the emergence of rice as the favoured cultivated grass and ultimately the key domesticate of the Yangtze basin was a protracted process
