    Dying in cyberworld: violent video games extinguished children’s death concept and attitude

    Death is often a taboo topic in society, especially among the Chinese community. Most of the violent video games spread immoral values of life and death. Hence deformed death concept and death attitude are easily moulded in children particularly without proper supervision from parents. The misconception of death concept and death attitude can manipulate primary school children’s attitudes towards death which gradually might lead children to harm themselves or others. This study is aimed at identifying the relationship between violent video games and children’s death concept and death attitude (Fear of death, Death avoidance, Approach Acceptance, Escape Acceptance). The differences between the level of exposure to violent video games towards children’s death concept and death attitude are also carried out in this study. A total of 397 data was collected from Malaysian Chinese schoolchildren between 10 to 12 years of age by using the purposive sampling method. Instruments used in this study consist of demographic information, Death Attitude Media Violence Exposure. The study showed that a high level of exposure towards violent video games had a significant negative correlation with death concept and fear of death, whilst significantly positive correlation with escape acceptance. The result of the independent samples t-test showed that children with high exposure to violent video games had lower death concept and fear of death and a higher level of escape acceptance.     Exploring the influence of carbon sources and salinity on the growth of microalgae

    In the domain of microalgae cultivation, the selection of carbon source and salinity profoundly impacts the growth and metabolic activity of species like Chlorella sp. Carbon sources and salt serve as vital substrates, dictating not only biomass production but also shaping cellular processes essential for various applications, particularly as agricultural biofertilizers. This study investigated the impact of different carbon sources and varying concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) on the growth of Chlorella sp. It was found that CO2 bubbling significantly improved microalgae growth, resulting in a notable 5.60% increase compared to cultivation with sodium bicarbonate. Within a span of 14 days, Chlorella sp. reached its peak biomass of 1.32 g/L ± 1.2% under CO2 bubbling, outperforming NaHCO3 cultivation, indicating a more efficient carbon utilization. Furthermore, the study revealed that Chlorella sp. achieved its highest biomass and lipid yield under CO2 bubbling cultivation without the addition of NaCl (1.32 g/L ± 1.2% and 0.43 g/L ± 3.0 % respectively), while a NaCl concentration of 0.5 M yielded the highest lipid content (34% ± 1.8 %) but had relatively low lipid yield at 0.21 g/L ± 5.0%.     New genetic loci link adipose and insulin biology to body fat distribution.

    Body fat distribution is a heritable trait and a well-established predictor of adverse metabolic outcomes, independent of overall adiposity. To increase our understanding of the genetic basis of body fat distribution and its molecular links to cardiometabolic traits, here we conduct genome-wide association meta-analyses of traits related to waist and hip circumferences in up to 224,459 individuals. We identify 49 loci (33 new) associated with waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (BMI), and an additional 19 loci newly associated with related waist and hip circumference measures (P < 5 × 10(-8)). In total, 20 of the 49 waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI loci show significant sexual dimorphism, 19 of which display a stronger effect in women. The identified loci were enriched for genes expressed in adipose tissue and for putative regulatory elements in adipocytes. Pathway analyses implicated adipogenesis, angiogenesis, transcriptional regulation and insulin resistance as processes affecting fat distribution, providing insight into potential pathophysiological mechanisms

    Youth Epidemiology and Resilience (YEAR) in a student population:prevalence and predictors of mental health symptoms

    Background: Adolescence is a pivotal developmental phase, marked by a high prevalence of mental health issues. The Singapore Youth Epidemiology and Resilience (YEAR) study aims to assess the prevalence of mental health symptoms, sociodemographic risk factors, and the protective role of resilience in a multi-ethnic, Asian school-going adolescent population. Methods: School-based adolescents aged 11-18 and their parents were invited from a stratified sample of national schools, designed to be demographically representative of the mainstream school-going population. In the screening phase, adolescents completed a battery of questionnaires including the Youth Self-Report (YSR), Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), and the Singapore Youth Resilience Scale (SYRESS). Thereafter, diagnostic interviews were conducted on high-risk and control participants. Data analysis was conducted to establish prevalence rates of mental health symptoms, and to examine the associations between mental health symptoms, sociodemographic factors, and resilience. Results: The final study sample consisted of 3336 adolescents and 2475 parents. Based on adolescents’ response on the YSR, 37.3%, 13.1% and 27.7% of the YEAR Study population scored in the clinical range for internalizing, externalizing and total problems respectively. Based on parents’ reporting on their children on the CBCL, 15.9%, 4.0% and 11.2% scored in the clinical range for internalizing, externalizing and total problems respectively. Sociodemographic risk factors for specific mental health symptoms were identified, including belonging to the age category of 15-16 (OR, 1.8-2.2) and those living in either a 4-, 5-room or executive flat (OR, 0.6-0.7), or in condominiums and other apartments (OR, 0.4-0.6). Total resilience scores were moderately correlated with total [rs(3334) = -.49, p &lt;.01] and internalizing [rs(3334) = -.50, p &lt;.01] problem scores on the YSR. Conclusion: This study illustrates the state of mental health of school-going adolescents aged 11-18. The greater prevalence of internalizing symptoms indicates the need for stronger attention for identifying internalizing problems and targeted interventions for those at risk of such symptoms. The association between mental health symptoms and resilience factors highlights the protective potential of resilience building for adolescents.</p

    Lack of Evidence for Regional Brain Volume or Cortical Thickness Abnormalities in Youths at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis:Findings From the Longitudinal Youth at Risk Study

    There is cumulative evidence that young people in an "at-risk mental state" (ARMS) for psychosis show structural brain abnormalities in frontolimbic areas, comparable to, but less extensive than those reported in established schizophrenia. However, most available data come from ARMS samples from Australia, Europe, and North America while large studies from other populations are missing. We conducted a structural brain magnetic resonance imaging study from a relatively large sample of 69 ARMS individuals and 32 matched healthy controls (HC) recruited from Singapore as part of the Longitudinal Youth At-Risk Study (LYRIKS). We used 2 complementary approaches: a voxel-based morphometry and a surface-based morphometry analysis to extract regional gray and white matter volumes (GMV and WMV) and cortical thickness (CT). At the whole-brain level, we did not find any statistically significant difference between ARMS and HC groups concerning total GMV and WMV or regional GMV, WMV, and CT. The additional comparison of 2 regions of interest, hippocampal, and ventricular volumes, did not return any significant difference either. Several characteristics of the LYRIKS sample like Asian origins or the absence of current illicit drug use could explain, alone or in conjunction, the negative findings and suggest that there may be no dramatic volumetric or CT abnormalities in ARMS.</p

    Biomarkers of hepatic injury and function in neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and with therapeutic hypothermia

    Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is now provided as standard care to infants with moderate-severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The role of TH in limiting neuronal injury is well recognized, but its effect on hepatic injury which occurs frequently in neonatal HIE is not known. Our objective was to characterize biomarkers of liver injury and function in the setting of neonatal HIE and to describe whether HIE severity and provision of TH influence these hepatic biomarkers. We performed a multicenter retrospective study and compared hepatic biomarkers obtained during the first postnatal week, according to the severity of HIE and whether treated with TH. Of a total of 361 infants with HIE, 223 (62%) received TH and 138 (38%) were managed at normal temperature. Most hepatic biomarkers and C-reactive protein (CRP) were significantly associated with the severity of HIE (p<0.001). Infants treated with TH had lower peak Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) concentrations (p=0.025) and delay in reaching peak CRP concentration (p<0.001).  Conclusion: We observed a significant association between the clinical grade of HIE and biomarkers of liver metabolism and function. Therapeutic hypothermia was associated with delayed CRP responses and with lower ALT concentrations and so may have the potential to modulate hepatic injury

    Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: a pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults

    Background Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. Methods We used data from 3663 population-based studies with 222 million participants that measured height and weight in representative samples of the general population. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends in the prevalence of different BMI categories, separately for adults (age ≥20 years) and school-aged children and adolescents (age 5–19 years), from 1990 to 2022 for 200 countries and territories. For adults, we report the individual and combined prevalence of underweight (BMI &lt;18·5 kg/m2) and obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2). For school&#x2;aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI &lt;2 SD below the median of the WHO growth reference) and obesity (BMI &gt;2 SD above the median). Findings From 1990 to 2022, the combined prevalence of underweight and obesity in adults decreased in 11 countries (6%) for women and 17 (9%) for men with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 that the observed changes were true decreases. The combined prevalence increased in 162 countries (81%) for women and 140 countries (70%) for men with a posterior probability of at least 0·80. In 2022, the combined prevalence of underweight and obesity was highest in island nations in the Caribbean and Polynesia and Micronesia, and countries in the Middle East and north Africa. Obesity prevalence was higher than underweight with posterior probability of at least 0·80 in 177 countries (89%) for women and 145 (73%) for men in 2022, whereas the converse was true in 16 countries (8%) for women, and 39 (20%) for men. From 1990 to 2022, the combined prevalence of thinness and obesity decreased among girls in five countries (3%) and among boys in 15 countries (8%) with a posterior probability of at least 0·80, and increased among girls in 140 countries (70%) and boys in 137 countries (69%) with a posterior probability of at least 0·80. The countries with highest combined prevalence of thinness and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents in 2022 were in Polynesia and Micronesia and the Caribbean for both sexes, and Chile and Qatar for boys. Combined prevalence was also high in some countries in south Asia, such as India and Pakistan, where thinness remained prevalent despite having declined. In 2022, obesity in school-aged children and adolescents was more prevalent than thinness with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 among girls in 133 countries (67%) and boys in 125 countries (63%), whereas the converse was true in 35 countries (18%) and 42 countries (21%), respectively. In almost all countries for both adults and school-aged children and adolescents, the increases in double burden were driven by increases in obesity, and decreases in double burden by declining underweight or thinness. Interpretation The combined burden of underweight and obesity has increased in most countries, driven by an increase in obesity, while underweight and thinness remain prevalent in south Asia and parts of Africa. A healthy nutrition transition that enhances access to nutritious foods is needed to address the remaining burden of underweight while curbing and reversing the increase in obesit
