You can't see what you can't see: Experimental evidence for how much relevant information may be missed due to Google's Web search personalisation
The influence of Web search personalisation on professional knowledge work is
an understudied area. Here we investigate how public sector officials
self-assess their dependency on the Google Web search engine, whether they are
aware of the potential impact of algorithmic biases on their ability to
retrieve all relevant information, and how much relevant information may
actually be missed due to Web search personalisation. We find that the majority
of participants in our experimental study are neither aware that there is a
potential problem nor do they have a strategy to mitigate the risk of missing
relevant information when performing online searches. Most significantly, we
provide empirical evidence that up to 20% of relevant information may be missed
due to Web search personalisation. This work has significant implications for
Web research by public sector professionals, who should be provided with
training about the potential algorithmic biases that may affect their judgments
and decision making, as well as clear guidelines how to minimise the risk of

3-dimensional Cauchy-Riemann structures and 2nd order ordinary differential equations
The equivalence problem for second order ODEs given modulo point
transformations is solved in full analogy with the equivalence problem of
nondegenerate 3-dimensional CR structures. This approach enables an analog of
the Feffereman metrics to be defined. The conformal class of these (split
signature) metrics is well defined by each point equivalence class of second
order ODEs. Its conformal curvature is interpreted in terms of the basic point
invariants of the corresponding class of ODEs

In vivo Firre and Dxz4 deletion elucidates roles for autosomal gene regulation
Recent evidence has determined that the conserved X chromosome mega-structurescontrolled by theFirreandDxz4loci are not required for X chromosome inactivation (XCI) in celllines. Here, we examined the in vivo contribution of these loci by generating mice carrying a singleor double deletion ofFirreandDxz4. We found that these mutants are viable, fertile and show nodefect in random or imprinted XCI. However, the lack of these elements results in manydysregulated genes on autosomes in an organ-specific manner. By comparing the dysregulatedgenes between the single and double deletion, we identified superloop, megadomain, andFirrelocus-dependent gene sets. The largest transcriptional effect was observed in all strains lacking theFirrelocus, indicating that this locus is the main driver for these autosomal expression signatures.Collectively, these findings suggest that these X-linked loci are involved in autosomal generegulation rather than XCI biology
Mediation of supersymmetry breaking in extra dimensions
We review the mechanisms of supersymmetry breaking mediation that occur in
sequestered models, where the visible and the hidden sectors are separated by
an extra dimension and communicate only via gravitational interactions. By
locality, soft breaking terms are forbidden at the classical level and reliably
computable within an effective field theory approach at the quantum level. We
present a self-contained discussion of these radiative gravitational effects
and the resulting pattern of soft masses, and give an overview of realistic
model building based on this set-up. We consider both flat and warped extra
dimensions, as well as the possibility that there be localized kinetic terms

Hairy Black Holes, Horizon Mass and Solitons
Properties of the horizon mass of hairy black holes are discussed with
emphasis on certain subtle and initially unexpected features. A key property
suggests that hairy black holes may be regarded as `bound states' of ordinary
black holes without hair and colored solitons. This model is then used to
predict the qualitative behavior of the horizon properties of hairy black
holes, to provide a physical `explanation' of their instability and to put
qualitative constraints on the end point configurations that result from this
instability. The available numerical calculations support these predictions.
Furthermore, the physical arguments are robust and should be applicable also in
more complicated situations where detailed numerical work is yet to be carried

On the local structure of Lorentzian Einstein manifolds with parallel distribution of null lines
We study transformations of coordinates on a Lorentzian Einstein manifold
with a parallel distribution of null lines and show that the general Walker
coordinates can be simplified. In these coordinates, the full Lorentzian
Einstein equation is reduced to equations on a family of Einstein Riemannian

Development Of Al-B-C Master Alloy Under External Fields
This study investigates the application of external fields in the development of an Al-B-C alloy, with the aim of synthesizing in situ Al3BC particles. A combination of ultrasonic cavitation and distributive mixing was applied for uniform dispersion of insoluble graphite particles in the Al melt, improving their wettability and its subsequent incorporation into the Al matrix. Lower operating temperatures facilitated the reduction in the amount of large clusters of reaction phases, with Al3BC being identified as the main phase in XRD analysis. The distribution of Al3BC particles was quantitatively evaluated. Grain refinement experiments reveal that Al-B-C alloy can act as a master alloy for Al-4Cu and AZ91D alloys, with average grain size reduction around 50% each at 1wt%Al-1.5B-2C additions
High-density information storage in an absolutely defined aperiodic sequence of monodisperse copolyester
Synthesis of a polymer composed of a large discrete number of chemically distinct monomers in an absolutely defined aperiodic sequence remains a challenge in polymer chemistry. The synthesis has largely been limited to oligomers having a limited number of repeating units due to the difficulties associated with the step-by-step addition of individual monomers to achieve high molecular weights. Here we report the copolymers of ??-hydroxy acids, poly(phenyllactic-co-lactic acid) (PcL) built via the cross-convergent method from four dyads of monomers as constituent units. Our proposed method allows scalable synthesis of sequence-defined PcL in a minimal number of coupling steps from reagents in stoichiometric amounts. Digital information can be stored in an aperiodic sequence of PcL, which can be fully retrieved as binary code by mass spectrometry sequencing. The information storage density (bit/Da) of PcL is 50% higher than DNA, and the storage capacity of PcL can also be increased by adjusting the molecular weight (~38???kDa)
Entropy-Corrected Holographic Dark Energy
The holographic dark energy (HDE) is now an interesting candidate of dark
energy, which has been studied extensively in the literature. In the derivation
of HDE, the black hole entropy plays an important role. In fact, the
entropy-area relation can be modified due to loop quantum gravity or other
reasons. With the modified entropy-area relation, we propose the so-called
``entropy-corrected holographic dark energy'' (ECHDE) in the present work. We
consider many aspects of ECHDE and find some interesting results. In addition,
we briefly consider the so-called ``entropy-corrected agegraphic dark energy''
