Transition of a vortex ring measured by 3D scanning Tomo-PIV
A vortex ring with piston-based Reynolds number Rep=4650 is studied experimentally by means of time-resolved scanning tomographic PIV. The present measurement technique provides the so-called 4D flow field, thus enables revealing the vortex ring’s transition from laminar to turbulent. The evolution of the ring torus as well as the generation of secondary vortex filaments in transition are first observed through 3D visualization. Analysis on the quantities of the vortex ring, such as circulation and vorticity components, defines the three evolution phases, namely laminar, transition and turbulent. The ring median plane is also examined to provide further insights on flow structure exhibited in transition. The axial vorticity component and radial velocity component are studied respectively and they are found to be organized in a multi-layer concentric-ring pattern. Spectrum analysis on the radial velocity component along the ring core and inner ring where secondary vortical activity happens reveals the dominate wavenumber in transition and broad band of wavenumbers in turbulent phase

Coherent output of photons from coupled superconducting transmission line resonators controlled by charge qubits
We study the coherent control of microwave photons propagating in a
superconducting waveguide consisting of coupled transmission line resonators,
each of which is connected to a tunable charge qubit. While these coupled line
resonators form an artificial photonic crystal with an engineered photonic band
structure, the charge qubits collectively behave as spin waves in the low
excitation limit, which modify the band-gap structure to slow and stop the
microwave propagation. The conceptual exploration here suggests an
electromagnetically controlled quantum device based on the on-chip circuit QED
for the coherent manipulation of photons, such as the dynamic creation of
laser-like output from the waveguide by pumping the artificial atoms for
population inversion.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
The Entanglement in Anisotropic Heisenberg XYZ Chain with inhomogeneous magnetic field
The thermal entanglement of a two-qubit anisotropic Heisenberg chain
under an inhomogeneous magnetic field b is studied. It is shown that when
inhomogeneity is increased to certain value, the entanglement can exhibit a
larger revival than that of less values of b. The property is both true for
zero temperature and a finite temperature. The results also show that the
entanglement and critical temperature can be increased by increasing
inhomogeneous exteral magnetic field

Modeling and optimization of the multichannel spark discharge
This paper reports a novel analytic model of this multichannel spark discharge, considering the delay time in the breakdown process, the electric transforming of the discharge channel from a capacitor to a resistor induced by the air breakdown, and the varying plasma resistance in the discharge process. The good agreement between the experimental and the simulated results validated the accuracy of this model. Based on this model, the influence of the circuit parameters on the maximum discharge channel number (MDCN) is investigated. Both the input voltage amplitude and the breakdown voltage threshold of each discharge channel play a critical role. With the increase of the input voltage and the decrease of the breakdown voltage, the MCDN increases almost linearly. With the increase of the discharge capacitance, the MDCN first rises and then remains almost constant. With the increase of the circuit inductance, the MDCN increases slowly but decreases quickly when the inductance increases over a certain value. There is an optimal value of the capacitor connected to the discharge channel corresponding to the MDCN. Finally, based on these results, to shorten the discharge time, a modified multichannel discharge circuit is developed and validated by the experiment. With only 6-kV input voltage, 31-channels discharge is achieved. The breakdown voltage of each electrode gap is larger than 3 kV. The modified discharge circuit is certain to be widely used in the PSJA flow control field
Bipolar High Field Excitations in Co/Cu/Co Nanopillars
Current-induced magnetic excitations in Co/Cu/Co bilayer nanopillars
(50 nm in diameter) have been studied experimentally at low temperatures
for large applied fields perpendicular to the layers. At sufficiently high
current densities excitations, which lead to a decrease in differential
resistance, are observed for both current polarities. Such bipolar excitations
are not expected in a single domain model of spin-transfer. We propose that at
high current densities strong asymmetries in the longitudinal spin accumulation
cause spin-wave instabilities transverse to the current direction in bilayer
samples, similar to those we have reported for single magnetic layer junctions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures+ 2 additional jpg figures (Fig. 2d and Fig. 3)

Thickness dependent magnetotransport in ultra-thin manganite films
To understand the near-interface magnetism in manganites, uniform, ultra-thin
films of La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_3 were grown epitaxially on single crystal (001)
LaAlO_3 and (110) NdGaO_3 substrates. The temperature and magnetic field
dependent film resistance is used to probe the film's structural and magnetic
properties. A surface and/or interface related dead-layer is inferred from the
thickness dependent resistance and magnetoresistance. The total thickness of
the dead layer is estimated to be for films on NdGaO_3 and for films on LaAlO_3.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
