Cu(In,Ga)Se2 absorber thinning and the homo-interface model: Influence of Mo back contact and 3-stage process on device characteristics

    Get PDF
Thinning the absorber layer is one of the possibilities envisaged to further decrease the production costs of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGSe) thin films solar cell technology. In the present study, the electronic transport in submicron CIGSe-based devices has been investigated and compared to that of standard devices. It is observed that when the absorber is around 0.5 μm-thick, tunnelling enhanced interface recombination dominates, which harms cells energy conversion efficiency. It is also shown that by varying either the properties of the Mo back contact or the characteristics of 3-stage growth processing, one can shift the dominating recombination mechanism from interface to space charge region and thereby improve the cells efficiency. Discussions on these experimental facts led to the conclusions that 3-stage process implies the formation of a CIGSe/CIGSe homo-interface, whose location as well as properties rule the device operation; its influence is enhanced in submicron CIGSe based solar cells

KASCADE: Astrophysical results and tests of hadronic interaction models

KASCADE is a multi-detector setup to get redundant information on single air shower basis. The information is used to perform multiparameter analyses to solve the threefold problem of the reconstruction of (i)the unknown primary energy, (ii) the primary mass, and (iii) to quantify the characteristics of the hadronic interactions in the air-shower development. In this talk recent results of the KASCADE data analyses are summarized concerning cosmic ray anisotropy studies, determination of flux spectra for different primary mass groups, and approaches to test hadronic interaction models. Neither large scale anisotropies nor point sources were found in the KASCADE data set. The energy spectra of the light element groups result in a knee-like bending and a steepening above the knee. The topology of the individual knee positions shows a dependency on the primary particle. Though no hadronic interaction model is fully able to describe the multi-parameter data of KASCADE consistently, the more recent models or improved versions of older models reproduce the data better than few years ago.Comment: to appear in Nucl. The automatic gain-matching in the PIBETA CsI calorimeter

Segmented electromagnetic calorimeters are used to determine both the total energy and direction (momentum components) of charged particles and photons. A trade off is involved in selecting the degree of segmentation of the calorimeter as the spatial and energy resolutions are affected differently. Increased number of individual detectors reduces accidental particle pile-up per detector but introduces complications related to ADC pedestals and pedestal variations, exacerbates the effects of electronic noise and ground loops, and requires summing and discrimination of multiple analog signals. Moreover, electromagnetic showers initiated by individual ionizing particles spread over several detectors. This complicates the precise gain-matching of the detector elements which requires an iterative procedure. The PIBETA calorimeter is a 240-module pure CsI non-magnetic detector optimized for detection of photons and electrons in the energy range 5-100 MeV. We present the computer-controlled, automatic, in situ gain-matching procedure that we developed and used routinely in several rare pion and muon decay experiments with the PIBETA detector.Comment: 28 pages, 13 postscript figures, LaTeX, submitted to Nucl. Exclusive Measurements of pd3Heππpd\to ^3He \pi\pi : the ABCABC Effect Revisited

    Get PDF
Exclusive measurements of the reactions pdpd\to 3Heπ+π^3He \pi^+ \pi^- and pdpd\to 3Heπ0π0^3He \pi^0\pi^0 have been carried out at Tp=0.895T_p=0.895 GeV at the CELSIUS storage ring using the WASA detector. The π+π\pi^+\pi^- channel evidences a pronounced enhancement at low invariant ππ\pi\pi masses - as anticipated from previous inclusive measurements of the ABC effect. This enhancement is seen to be even much larger in the isoscalar π0π0\pi^0\pi^0 channel. The differential distributions prove this enhancement to be of scalar-isoscalar nature. ΔΔ\Delta\Delta calculations give a good description of the data, if a boundstate condition is imposed for the intermediate ΔΔ\Delta\Delta system.Comment: extended version, 8 pages, 7 figures, theoretical model calculations adde

The pp -> pp pi pi pi reaction channels in the threshold region

The cross section for prompt neutral and charged three pion production in pp interactions was measured at excess energies in the range 160 - 217 MeV. That comprises the first measurement of the pp->pp pi0pi0pi0 reaction and the comparison with the pp->pp pi+pi-pi0 reaction, in a very direct way. The experiment was performed above the eta meson production threshold and the cross section normalization was obtained from a concurrent measurement of the reaction pp->pp eta with the eta decaying into 3 pions. Since the same final states are selected, the measurement has a low systematical error. The measured cross section ratio sigma(pp->pp pi+pi-pi0)/sigma(pp->pp pi0\pi0\pi0) is compared to predictions of dominance of different isobars in the intermediate state.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures New discussion on the pp->pp3pi reaction mechanis

    Conrad and Piłsudski

Although there would seem to be no apparent link between the English novelist Joseph Conrad and Marshal Józef Piłsudski, who restored the Polish State after World War I, they did in fact have much in common. Both hailed from the Polish eastern borderlands and both came from patriotic noble families. Both had been nurtured on the Polish Romantic poets - and Słowacki in particular. For both of them the failure of the 1863 January Uprising was a traumatic experience and both of them suffered exile in Russia. However, whereas Conrad did not believe that Poland would ever be able to regain her independence, Piłsudski led a successful armed struggle for the Polish cause, thus earning the writer’s unstinting admiration. Piłsudski for his part took pleasure in reading Conrad’s Lord Jim

SUBSTRATUM, GRANULARITY, CHANGEBILITY AND EVOLUTION IN THE UNIVERSE

A new structuralistic approach concerning cosmic evolution is proposed. The concept of akanto is introduced. The local evolution would imitate the evolution of the Universe. The notion of akanton is understood as a superative cell, astrogennic cell which would exist from the very beginning. T'he cosmic evolution is considered in terms of biogenetic scheme which is intimate with the Hegel's idea of organism

Observation of strong final-state effects in pi+ production in pp collisions at 400 MeV

Differential cross sections of the reactions ppdπ+pp \to d\pi^+ and pppnπ+pp \to pn\pi^+ have been measured at Tp=400T_p = 400 MeV by detecting the charged ejectiles in the angular range 40ΘLab214^0 \leq \Theta_{Lab} \leq 21^\circ. The deduced total cross sections agree well with those published previously for neighbouring energies. The invariant mass spectra are observed to be strongly affected by Δ\Delta production and NNNN final-state interaction. The data are well described by Monte Carlo simulations including both these effects. The ratio of pppnπ+pp \to pn\pi^+ and ppdπ+pp \to d\pi^+ cross sections also compares favourably to a recent theoretical prediction which suggests a dominance of npnp-production in the relative 3S1^3S_1-state.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

Study of the p p -> p p pi+ pi- Reaction in the Low-Energy Tail of the Roper Resonance

Exclusive measurements of the p p -> p p pi+ pi- reaction have been carried out at Tp = 775 MeV at CELSIUS using the PROMICE/WASA setup. Together with data obtained at lower energy they point to a dominance of the Roper excitation in this process. From the observed interference of its decay routes N* -> N sigma and N* -> Delta pi -> N sigma their energy-dependent relative branching ratio is determined
