Design definition study of a lift/cruise fan technology V/STOL airplane: Summary

    Get PDF
A two-engine three-fan V/STOL airplane was designed to fulfill naval operational requirements. A multimission airplane was developed from study of specific point designs. Based on the multimission concept, airplanes were designed to demonstrate and develop the technology and operational procedures for this class of aircraft. Use of interconnected variable pitch fans led to a good balance between high thrust with responsive control and efficient thrust at cruise speeds. The airplanes and their characteristics are presented

Multi-parameter optimization tool for low-cost commercial fuselage crown designs

The work in progress for developing a methodology and software tool to aid in the optimal design of composite structures is discussed. The methodology is being developed to take advantage of the ability to tailor the composite material in conjunction with the design of the structure. The composites optimization design software UWCODA was found to be very successful in preliminary testing and early experience. UWCODA is a composites design code that uses a number of plies and fiber angles as design variables, employs maximum strain failure criteria for objective function and additional constraints, includes Boeing design tools for stiffened panels, and includes stiffener geometry in the design variables

The dimpling in the CuO_2 planes of YBa_2Cu_3O_x (x=6.806-6.984, T=20-300 K) measured by yttrium EXAFS

The dimpling of the CuO_2 planes (spacing between the O2,3 and Cu2 layers) in YBa_2Cu_3O_x has been measured as a function of oxygen concentration and temperature by yttrium x-ray extended-fine-structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). The relative variations of the dimpling with doping (x=6.806-6.984) and temperature (20-300 K) are weak (within 0.05 AA), and arise mainly from displacements of the Cu2 atoms off the O2,3 plane towards Ba. The dimpling appears to be connected with the transition from the underdoped to the overdoped regimes at x=6.95, and with a characteristic temperature in the normal state, T*=150 K.Comment: 6 pages, 2 ps figs, LaTEX, Elsevier Elsart styl

Conceptual design studies of candidate V/STOL lift fan commercial short haul transport for 1980 - 1985 V/STOL lift fan study

    Get PDF
Conceptual designs of V/STOL lift fan commercial short haul transport aircraft for the 1980-85 time period were studied to determine their technical and economic feasibility. The engine concepts included both integral and remote fans. The scope of the study included definition of the hover control concept for each propulsion system, aircraft design, aircraft mass properties, cruise performance, noise and ride qualities evaluation. Economic evaluating was also studied on a basis of direct operating costs and route structure

V/STOL lift fan commercial short haul transports: Continuing conceptual design study

A design study of commercial V/STOL transport airplanes for a 1985 operational time period has been made. The baseline mission considered was 400 nmi at a cruise speed of M = 0.75 and a 100-passenger payload with VTOL. Variations from the baseline included mission distance, payload, cruise speed, and propulsion system failure philosophy. All designs used propulsion systems consisting of multiple gas generators driving remote tip turbine lift and lift/cruise fans. By considering the fan to be designed for operational reliability, significant simplication of the airplane systems and reduction in airplane size and cost can be achieved

Design definition study of a NASA/Navy lift/cruise fan technology V/STOL airplane: Risk assessment addendum to the final report

    Get PDF
An assessment of risk, in terms of delivery delays, cost overrun, and performance achievement, associated with the V/STOL technology airplane is presented. The risk is discussed in terms of weight, structure, aerodynamics, propulsion, mechanical drive, and flight controls. The analysis ensures that risks associated with the design and development of the airplane will be eliminated in the course of the program and a useful technology airplane that meets the predicted cost, schedule, and performance can be produced

X-ray Absorption Fine Structure in Embedded Atoms

Oscillatory structure is found in the atomic background absorption in x-ray-absorption fine structure (XAFS). This atomic-XAFS or AXAFS arises from scattering within an embedded atom, and is analogous to the Ramsauer-Townsend effect. Calculations and measurements confirm the existence of AXAFS and show that it can dominate contributions such as multi-electron excitations. The structure is sensitive to chemical effects and thus provides a new probe of bonding and exchange effects on the scattering potential.Comment: 4 pages plus 2 postscript figures, REVTEX 3.

On Beyond LP: Optimization of Complex Systems

Many engineers designing a complex system would like to optimize its performance, and perform trade-off studies to better understand the impact of decisions. The complex systems are often modeled with functions that are non-linear, non-convex, multimodal, discontinuous and available only through computer programs. They may involve continuous and integer variables. In this talk, I will summarize some theoretical results regarding performance of random search algorithms, and discuss a new meta-control methodology that adaptively guides an interacting-particle algorithm with a filtering technique. Numerical results will be presented demonstrating how the meta-control methodology dynamically heats and cools a temperature parameter based on observed behavior of the algorithm to achieve desired performance characteristics (e.g., quality of the final outcome, algorithm running time, etc.). An application in engineering design of composites structures for aircraft fuselage, such as the new 787 Boeing composite aircraft, will be mentioned
