Plasticity and awareness of bodily distortion
Knowledge of the body is filtered by perceptual information, recalibrated through predominantly innate stored information, and neurally mediated by direct sensory motor information. Despite multiple sources, the immediate prediction, construction, and evaluation of one’s body are distorted. The origins of such distortions are unclear. In this review, we consider three possible sources of awareness that inform body distortion. First, the precision in the body metric may be based on the sight and positioning sense of a particular body segment. This view provides information on the dual nature of body representation, the reliability of a conscious body image, and implicit alterations in the metrics and positional correspondence of body parts. Second, body awareness may reflect an innate organizational experience of unity and continuity in the brain, with no strong isomorphism to body morphology. Third, body awareness may be based on efferent/afferent neural signals, suggesting that major body distortions may result from changes in neural sensorimotor experiences. All these views can be supported empirically, suggesting that body awareness is synthesized from multimodal integration and the temporal constancy of multiple body representations. For each of these views, we briefly discuss abnormalities and therapeutic strategies for correcting the bodily distortions in various clinical disorder
Throughout the XXth century, during the period of the romantic recovery of occitan medieval times and in harmony with the movements of national awakening that operated all over Europe, a lively movement of linguistic and literary renaissance is spreading throughout the occitane areas of France. In spite of this, the lack of consensus among its followers, especially around the use of the language, will come to have deep repercussions in the destiny of the oc language, as well as in all of the occitan renaissance movement

beta-risk: a New Surrogate Risk for Learning from Weakly Labeled Data
International audienceDuring the past few years, the machine learning community has paid attention to developing new methods for learning from weakly labeled data. This field covers different settings like semi-supervised learning, learning with label proportions, multi-instance learning, noise-tolerant learning, etc. This paper presents a generic framework to deal with these weakly labeled scenarios. We introduce the \betarisk as a generalized formulation of the standard empirical risk based on surrogate margin-based loss functions. This risk allows us to express the reliability on the labels and to derive different kinds of learning algorithms. We specifically focus on SVMs and propose a soft margin \betasvm algorithm which behaves better that the state of the art
Microbioenergy : heat and biogas biomass-fueled generation plant for domestic use. Design, construction and monitoring of microbioenergy prototype
This paper presents a small-scale heat and biogas generator, which aim is to promote the use of biomass as mean of sustainable energy production and waste management in areas with high availability of ligneous and cellulosic biomass waste. The proposed system called Microbioenergy® integrates two complementary technologies of biomass valorization, respectively Compost Heat Recovery System (CHRS) and Aerobic Digestion (AD), and includes an external feeding system based on the dark fermentation process. The plant is thought for decentralized energy generation by biomass valorization and promotes greening, as well as EU policies on circular economy.
In this project the first on-field Microbioenergy® prototype has been constructed and tested in the rural area of Lozzo Atestino (Padua), in collaboration with the Italian association TERRE (for the construction phase) and the department of Environmental Science and Policy - Università di Milano (for the design phase).
The thesis includes a detailed literature research, to explain the two biomass valorization processes, and Microbioenergy® combined solution development, including the design and construction procedures and the simulation and monitoring results. Some relevant results, here reported, indicate a system maximum temperature of over 60°C allowing the production of hot water of temperature up to 55°C. The application of Microbioenergy® prototype as an integration to a pellet boiler shows a 33 % estimated value of savings on pellet consumption to cover the energy request, for both space heating and domestic hot water production, of the case study and a 100% estimated value of savings on gas consumption for cooking in the case study
