    Nonparametric estimation for the ruin probability in a Lévy risk model under low-frequency observation

    In this paper, we propose a nonparametric estimator for the ruin probability in a spectrally negative Lévy risk model based on low-frequency observation. The estimator is constructed via the Fourier transform of the ruin probability. The convergence rates of the estimator are studied for large sample size.     First Principles Study on the Electronic Structure and Interface Stability of Hybrid Silicene/Fluorosilicene Nanoribbons

The interface stability of hybrid silicene/fluorosilicene nanoribbons (SFNRs) has been investigated by using density functional theory calculations, where fluorosilicene is the fully fluorinated silicene. It is found that the diffusion of F atoms at the zigzag and armchair interfaces of SFNRs is endothermic, and the corresponding minimum energy barriers are respectively 1.66 and 1.56 eV, which are remarkably higher than the minimum diffusion energy barrier of one F atom and two F atoms on pristine silicene 1.00 and 1.29 eV, respectively. Therefore, the thermal stability of SFNRs can be significantly enhanced by increasing the F diffusion barriers through silicene/fluorosilicene interface engineering. In addition, the electronic and magnetic properties of SFNRs are also investigated. It is found that the armchair SFNRs are nonmagnetic semiconductors, and the band gap of armchair SFNRs presents oscillatory behavior when the width of silicene part changing. For the zigzag SFNRs, the antiferromagnetic semiconducting state is the most stable one. This work provides fundamental insights for the applications of SFNRs in electronic devices

    The compact form of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian is a reformulation of its original form and is expressed in terms of chiral rotated electroweak gauge fields, which is crucial for relating the information of underlying theories to the coefficients of the low-energy effective Lagrangian.     Nanoparticles to Nanoholes: Fabrication of Porous GaN with Precisely Controlled Dimension via the Enhanced GaN Decomposition by Au Nanoparticles

    Porous GaN exhibits unique optoelectronic, chemical, and physical properties such as shift of band gap, increased surface area ratio, excellent chemical, mechanical, and thermal stability as well as efficient luminescence as compared to its bulk counterpart. Herein, we demonstrate a precise, efficient, and still cost-effective method of the fabrication of porous GaN through the enhanced GaN decomposition by using Au nanoparticles (NPs) as a catalyst, in which the size, density, and shape of the pores (nanoholes, NHs) can be precisely controlled. By the thermal annealing assisted with the Au NPs, the NHs are successfully fabricated, and the existence of Au NPs significantly accelerate the GaN decomposition at the interface between the NPs and GaN due to the Ga absorption by the Au NPs. We systematically study the formation mechanism of NHs assisted by the Au NPs by means of annealing temperature, duration, and Au deposition amount, and the results are systematically analyzed and discussed

    Prospects for terahertz imaging the human skin cancer with the help of gold-nanoparticles-based terahertz-to-infrared converter

    The design is suggested, and possible operation parameters are discussed, of an instrument to inspect a skin cancer tumour in the terahertz (THz) range, transferring the image into the infrared (IR) and making it visible with the help of standard IR camera. The central element of the device is the THz-to-IR converter, a Teflon or silicon film matrix with embedded 8.5 nm diameter gold nanoparticles. The use of external THz source for irradiating the biological tissue sample is presumed. The converter's temporal characteristics enable its performance in a real-time scale.     The chemopreventive polyphenol Curcumin prevents hematogenous breast cancer metastases in immunodeficient mice

    Dissemination of metastatic cells probably occurs long before diagnosis of the primary tumor. Metastasis during early phases of carcinogenesis in high risk patients is therefore a potential prevention target. The plant polyphenol Curcumin has been proposed for dietary prevention of cancer. We therefore examined its effects on the human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 in vitro and in a mouse metastasis model. Curcumin strongly induces apoptosis in MDA- MB- 231 cells in correlation with reduced activation of the survival pathway NF kappa B, as a consequence of diminished I kappa B and p65 phosphorylation. Curcumin also reduces the expression of major matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) due to reduced NF kappa B activity and transcriptional downregulation of AP-1. NF kappa B/p65 silencing is sufficient to downregulate c-jun and MMP expression. Reduced NF kappa B/AP-1 activity and MMP expression lead to diminished invasion through a reconstituted basement membrane and to a significantly lower number of lung metastases in immunodeficient mice after intercardiac injection of 231 cells (p=0.0035). 68% of Curcumin treated but only 17% of untreated animals showed no or very few lung metastases, most likely as a consequence of down-regulation of NF kappa B/AP-1 dependent MMP expression and direct apoptotic effects on circulating tumor cells but not on established metastases. Dietary chemoprevention of metastases appears therefore feasible. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel
