Atmospheric effects of the emerging mainland Chinese transportation system at and beyond the regional scale
Local surface travel needs in the People's Republic of China (mainland China) have traditionally been met largely by nonpolluting bicycles. A major automobile manufacturing/importing effort has begun in the country over the last decade, and planning documents indicate that the Chinese may strive to acquire more than 100 million vehicles early in the next century. By analogy with large automotive fleets already existing in the western world, both regional and global scale pollution effects are to be expected from the increase. The present work adopts the latest projections of Chinese automobile manufacture and performs some quantitative assessments of the extent of pollution generation. Focus for the investigation is placed upon the oxidant ozone. Emissions of the precursor species nitrogen oxides and volatile organics are constructed based on data for the current automotive sector in the eastern portion of the United States. Ozone production is first estimated from measured values for continental/oceanic scale yields relative to precursor oxidation. The estimates are then corroborated through idealized two dimensional modeling of the photochemistry taking place in springtime air flow off the Asian land mass and toward the Pacific Ocean. The projected fleet sizes could increase coastal and remote oceanic ozone concentrations by tens of parts per billion (ppb) in the lower troposphere. Influences on the tropospheric aerosol system and on the major greenhouse gas carbon dioxide are treated peripherally. Nitrogen oxides created during the vehicular internal combustion process will contribute to nitrate pollution levels measured in the open Pacific. The potential for soot and fugitive dust increases should be considered as the automotive infrastructure develops. Since the emerging Chinese automotive transportation system will represent a substantial addition to the global fleet and all the carbon in gasoline is eventually oxidized completely, a significant rise in global carbon dioxide inputs will ensue as well. Some policy issues are treated preliminary. The assumption is made that alterations to regional oxidant/aerosol systems and to terrestrial climate are conceivable. The likelihood that the Chinese can achieve the latest vehicle fleet goals is discussed, from the points of view of new production, positive pollution feedbacks from a growing automobile industry, and known petroleum reserves. Vehicular fuel and maintenance options lying before the Chinese are outlines and compared. To provide some perspective on the magnitude of the environmental changes associated with an Asian automotive buildup, recent estimates of the effects of future air traffic over the Pacific Rim are described
Molecular genotyping of placental site and epithelioid trophoblastic tumours; female predominance
OBJECTIVE: To investigate a large series of placental site trophoblastic tumours (PSTT) and epithelioid trophoblastic tumours (ETT) and determine the relationship between their development and the type and sex of both the immediately antecedent and causative pregnancies. METHODS: The antecedent pregnancy was determined from patient records in 92 cases with a confirmed diagnosis of PSTT, ETT or mixed PSTT/ETT. In a subset of 57 cases, type and sex of the causative pregnancy was established by molecular genotyping of patient and tumour tissue microdissected from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks. RESULTS: The antecedent pregnancy was a normal live birth in 59 (64%) cases, a hydatidiform mole in 19 (21%) and other pregnancy loss in 14 (15%). Where the sex was recorded, 36 (78%) of 46 antecedent normal pregnancies were female, a significantly greater proportion than expected (p<0.0001). Genotyping of 57 cases found 15 (26%) to derive from hydatidiform moles while 42 (74%) arose in non-molar pregnancies. Where the causative pregnancy was non-molar, 38 (91%) tumours arose in female conceptions, significantly greater than expected (p <0.0001). Analysis of short tandem repeats on the X chromosome in three tumours with an XY chromosomal constitution confirmed that the X chromosome was maternal in origin. CONCLUSIONS: PSTT and ETT predominantly arise in female pregnancies but can develop in male pregnancies. A male derived X chromosome is not required for the development of these tumours. Cognitively-inspired Agent-based Service Composition for Mobile & Pervasive Computing
Automatic service composition in mobile and pervasive computing faces many
challenges due to the complex and highly dynamic nature of the environment.
Common approaches consider service composition as a decision problem whose
solution is usually addressed from optimization perspectives which are not
feasible in practice due to the intractability of the problem, limited
computational resources of smart devices, service host's mobility, and time
constraints to tailor composition plans. Thus, our main contribution is the
development of a cognitively-inspired agent-based service composition model
focused on bounded rationality rather than optimality, which allows the system
to compensate for limited resources by selectively filtering out continuous
streams of data. Our approach exhibits features such as distributedness,
modularity, emergent global functionality, and robustness, which endow it with
capabilities to perform decentralized service composition by orchestrating
manifold service providers and conflicting goals from multiple users. The
evaluation of our approach shows promising results when compared against

Accumulation-mode aerosol number concentrations in the Arctic during the ARCTAS aircraft campaign: Long-range transport of polluted and clean air from the Asian continent
We evaluate the impact of transport from midlatitudes on aerosol number concentrations in the accumulation mode (light-scattering particles (LSP) with diameters >180 nm) in the Arctic during the Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites (ARCTAS) campaign. We focus on transport from the Asian continent. We find marked contrasts in the number concentration (NLSP), transport efficiency (TE N-LSP, the fraction transported from sources to the Arctic), size distribution, and the chemical composition of aerosols between air parcels from anthropogenic sources in East Asia (Asian AN) and biomass burning sources in Russia and Kazakhstan (Russian BB). Asian AN air had lower NLSP and TEN-LSP (25 cm-3 and 18% in spring and 6.2 cm-3 and 3.0% in summer) than Russian BB air (280 cm-3 and 97% in spring and 36 cm-3 and 7.6% in summer) due to more efficient wet scavenging during transport from East Asia. Russian BB in this spring is the most important source of accumulation-mode aerosols over the Arctic, and BB emissions are found to be the primary source of aerosols within all the data in spring during ARCTAS. On the other hand, the contribution of Asian AN transport had a negligible effect on the accumulation-mode aerosol number concentration in the Arctic during ARCTAS. Compared with background air, NLSP was 2.3-4.7 times greater for Russian BB air but 2.4-2.6 times less for Asian AN air in both spring and summer. This result shows that the transport of Asian AN air decreases aerosol number concentrations in the Arctic, despite the large emissions of aerosols in East Asia. The very low aerosol number concentrations in Asian AN air were caused by wet removal during vertical transport in association with warm conveyor belts (WCBs). Therefore, this cleansing effect will be prominent for air transported via WCBs from other midlatitude regions and seasons. The inflow of clean midlatitude air can potentially have an important impact on accumulation-mode aerosol number concentrations in the Arctic. Copyright 2011 by the American Geophysical Union
Dehydration of forward osmosis membranes in treating high salinity wastewaters: Performance and implications
© 2015 Elsevier B.V. Forward osmosis (FO) is a promising technique for desalinating high salinity wastewaters, and membrane performance is critical for its successful application. In this work, the dehydration of FO membranes was demonstrated for both commercial cellulose triacetate and tailor-made thin-film composite membranes. A significant loss of FO flux was observed after membrane dehydration, but the pure water permeability and rejection properties remained about the same. Dehydrated membrane showed opaque/white spots on the initially homogeneous membrane. Once dehydrated, a membrane with a much lower water flux will be resulting in. It was demonstrated that when the active skin layer was in contact with the saline solution before the support layer was brought into contact with an aqueous solution, membrane dehydration took place. The dehydration was ascribed to osmosis gradient across the active layer that caused water flow from membrane support layer to the active layer, resulting in support dehydration. The dehydrated membrane could be rewetted again by low surface tension liquid or reverse osmosis, illustrating that membrane dehydration is reversible. Precaution should be addressed when operating large FO system to prevent the membrane dehydration for high salinity water treatment
In the Shadow of the Transiting Disk: Imaging epsilon Aurigae in Eclipse
Eclipses of the single-line spectroscopic binary star, epsilon Aurigae,
provide an opportunity to study the poorly-defined companion. We used the MIRC
beam combiner on the CHARA array to create interferometric images during
eclipse ingress. Our results demonstrate that the eclipsing body is a dark disk
that is opaque and tilted, and therefore exclude alternative models for the
system. These data constrain the geometry and masses of the components,
providing evidence that the F-star is not a massive supergiant star.Comment: As submitted to Nature. Published in Nature April 8, 2010
Quantum teleportation with nonclassical correlated states in noninertial frames
Quantum teleportation is studied in noninertial frame, for fermionic case,
when Alice and Bob share a general nonclassical correlated state. In
noninertial frames two fidelities of teleportation are given. It is found that
the average fidelity of teleportation from a separable and nonclassical
correlated state is increasing with the amount of nonclassical correlation of
the state. However, for any particular nonclassical correlated state, the
fidelity of teleportation decreases by increasing the acceleration.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, expanded version to appear in Quantum Inf.

Genes encoding Pir51, Beclin 1, RbAp48 and aldolase b are up or down-regulated in human primary hepatocellular carcinoma
Aim: To reveal new tumor markers and target genes from differentially expressed genes of primary tumor samples using cDNA microarray. Methods: The 33P labeled cDNAs were synthesized by reverse transcription of message RNA from the liver cancerous tissue and adjacent non-cancerous liver tissue from the same patient and used to hybridize to LifeGrid 1.0 cDNA microarray blot containing 8400 known and unique human cDNA gene targets, and an expression profile of genes was produced in one paired human liver tumor tissue. After a global analysis of gene expression of 8400 genes, we selected some genes to confirm the differential expression using Northern blot and RT-PCR. Results: Parallel analysis of the hybridized signals enabled us to get an expression profile of genes in which about 500 genes were differentially expressed in the paired liver tumor tissues. We identified 4 genes, the expression of three (Beclin 1, RbAp48 and Pir51) were increased and one (aldolase b) was decreased in liver tumor tissues. In addition, the expression of these genes in 6 hepatoma cell lines was also showed by RT-PCR analysis. Conclusion: cDNA microarray permits a high throughput identification of changes in gene expression. The genes encoding Beclin 1, RbAp48, Pir51 and aldolase b are first reported that may be related with hepatocarcinoma. Copyright © 2004 by The WJG Press ISSN 1007-9327.published_or_final_versio
