Iso-vector and Iso-scalar Tensor Charges of the Nucleon from Lattice QCD
We present results for the iso-vector and flavor diagonal tensor charges
, , , and needed to probe novel tensor
interactions at the TeV scale in neutron and nuclear -decays and the
contribution of the quark electric dipole moment (EDM) to the neutron EDM. The
lattice QCD calculations were done using nine ensembles of gauge configurations
generated by the MILC collaboration using the HISQ action with 2+1+1 dynamical
flavors. These ensembles span three lattice spacings and
fm and three quark masses corresponding to the pion masses and MeV. Using estimates from these ensembles, we
quantify all systematic uncertainties and perform a simultaneous extrapolation
in the lattice spacing, volume and light quark masses for the connected
contributions. The final estimates of the connected nucleon (proton) tensor
charge for the iso-vector combination is in the
scheme at GeV. The additional disconnected quark loop
contributions needed for the flavor-diagonal matrix elements are calculated
using a stochastic estimator employing the truncated solver method with the
all-mode-averaging technique. We find that the size of the disconnected
contribution is smaller than the statistical error in the connected
contribution. This allows us to bound the disconnected contribution and include
it as an additional uncertainty in the flavor-diagonal charges. After a
continuum extrapolation, we find , and . The strangeness tensor charge, that can make a
significant contribution to the neutron EDM due to the large ratio
, is in the continuum limit.Comment: Final published versio
A Lattice Study of Near-threshold Scattering
In this exploratory lattice study, low-energy near threshold scattering of
the meson system is analyzed using lattice QCD with
twisted mass fermion configurations. Both s-wave () and p-wave
() channels are investigated. It is found that the interaction between
the two charmed mesons is attractive near the threshold in both channels. This
calculation provides some hints in the searching of resonances or bound states
around the threshold of system.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, matches the version on PR
A Lattice Study of Quark and Glue Momenta and Angular Momenta in the Nucleon
We report a complete calculation of the quark and glue momenta and angular
momenta in the proton. These include the quark contributions from both the
connected and disconnected insertions. The quark disconnected insertion loops
are computed with noise, and the signal-to-noise is improved with
unbiased subtractions. The glue operator is comprised of gauge-field tensors
constructed from the overlap operator. The calculation is carried out on a
quenched lattice at for Wilson fermions with
, and which correspond to pion masses at , and ~MeV, respectively. The chirally extrapolated and quark
momentum/angular momentum fraction is found to be , the
strange momentum/angular momentum fraction is , and that of
the glue is . The previous study of quark spin on the same
lattice revealed that it carries a fraction of of proton spin. The
orbital angular momenta of the quarks are then obtained from subtracting the
spin from their corresponding angular momentum components. We find that the
quark orbital angular momentum constitutes of the proton spin with
almost all of it coming from the disconnected insertions.Comment: Renormalization section is expanded to include more details. There
are slight changes in the final numbers. A few modification and corrections
are made in the rest of the tex
Lattice simulations with eight flavors of domain wall fermions in SU(3) gauge theory
We study an SU(3) gauge theory with Nf=8 degenerate flavors of light fermions
in the fundamental representation. Using the domain wall fermion formulation,
we investigate the light hadron spectrum, chiral condensate and electroweak S
parameter. We consider a range of light fermion masses on two lattice volumes
at a single gauge coupling chosen so that IR scales approximately match those
from our previous studies of the two- and six-flavor systems. Our results for
the Nf=8 spectrum suggest spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, though fits to
the fermion mass dependence of spectral quantities do not strongly disfavor the
hypothesis of mass-deformed infrared conformality. Compared to Nf=2 we observe
a significant enhancement of the chiral condensate relative to the symmetry
breaking scale F, similar to the situation for Nf=6. The reduction of the S
parameter, related to parity doubling in the vector and axial-vector channels,
is also comparable to our six-flavor results
Infant Serum and Maternal Milk Vitamin B-12 Are Positively Correlated in Kenyan Infant-Mother Dyads at 1-6 Months Postpartum, Irrespective of Infant Feeding Practice.
BackgroundVitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient required for many functions including DNA synthesis, erythropoiesis, and brain development. If maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentrations are low, infants may face elevated risks of deficiency when exclusively breastfed.ObjectiveWe evaluated cross-sectional associations between infant serum vitamin B-12 concentrations and maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentrations at 1-6 mo postpartum among an unsupplemented population in rural western Kenya, and assessed biological demographic, and dietary characteristics associated with adequate infant serum vitamin B-12.MethodsWe modeled 1) infant serum vitamin B-12 using maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentration with linear regression; and 2) adequate (>220 pmol/L) infant serum vitamin B-12 using hypothesized biological, demographic, and dietary predictors with logistic regression. In both models, we used generalized estimating equations to account for correlated observations at the cluster-level.ResultsThe median (quartile 1, quartile 3) infant serum vitamin B-12 concentration was 276 pmol/L (193, 399 pmol/L) and approximately one-third of infants had serum vitamin B-12 ≤220 pmol/L, indicating that they were vitamin B-12 depleted or deficient. There was a positive correlation between maternal milk and infant serum vitamin B-12 (r = 0.36, P < 0.001) and in multivariable analyses, maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentration was significantly associated with infant serum vitamin B-12 adequacy (P-trend = 0.03).ConclusionsDespite a high prevalence (90%) of maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentrations below the level used to establish the Adequate Intake (<310 pmol/L), there was a low prevalence of infant vitamin B-12 deficiency. We found few factors that were associated with infant vitamin B-12 adequacy in this population, including infant feeding practices, although maternal vitamin B-12 status was not measured. The contribution of maternal milk to infant vitamin B-12 status remains important to quantify across populations, given that maternal milk vitamin B-12 concentration is modifiable with supplementation. Coherency in Neutrino-Nucleus Elastic Scattering
Neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering provides a unique laboratory to study the
quantum mechanical coherency effects in electroweak interactions, towards which
several experimental programs are being actively pursued. We report results of
our quantitative studies on the transitions towards decoherency. A parameter
() is identified to describe the degree of coherency, and its
variations with incoming neutrino energy, detector threshold and target nucleus
are studied. The ranges of which can be probed with realistic neutrino
experiments are derived, indicating complementarity between projects with
different sources and targets. Uncertainties in nuclear physics and in
would constrain sensitivities in probing physics beyond the standard model. The
maximum neutrino energies corresponding to >0.95 are derived.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables. V2 -- Published Versio
Two Photon Decays of from Lattice QCD
We present an exploratory lattice study for the two-photon decay of
using twisted mass lattice QCD gauge configurations generated by the
European Twisted Mass Collaboration. Two different lattice spacings of
fm and fm are used in the study, both of which are of
physical size of 2. The decay widths are found to be KeV for the
coarser lattice and KeV for the finer lattice respectively where the
errors are purely statistical. A naive extrapolation towards the continuum
limit yields KeV which is smaller than the previous
quenched result and most of the current experimental results. Possible reasons
are discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures; matches the published versio
Asymptomatic ratio for seasonal H1N1 influenza infection among schoolchildren in Taiwan
Studies indicate that asymptomatic infections do indeed occur frequently for both seasonal and pandemic influenza, accounting for about one-third of influenza infections. Studies carried out during the 2009 pH1N1 pandemic have found significant antibody response against seasonal H1N1 and H3N2 vaccine strains in schoolchildren receiving only pandemic H1N1 monovalent vaccine, yet reported either no symptoms or only mild symptoms
Protocol for the China PEACE (Patient-centered Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events) retrospective study of coronary catheterisation and percutaneous coronary intervention
Introduction: During the past decade, the volume of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in China has risen by more than 20-fold. Yet little is known about patterns of care and outcomes across hospitals, regions and time during this period of rising cardiovascular disease and dynamic change in the Chinese healthcare system. Methods and analysis Using the China PEACE (Patient-centered Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events) research network, the Retrospective Study of Coronary Catheterisation and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (China PEACE-Retrospective CathPCI Study) will examine a nationally representative sample of 11 900 patients who underwent coronary catheterisation or PCI at 55 Chinese hospitals during 2001, 2006 and 2011. We selected patients and study sites using a two-stage cluster sampling design with simple random sampling stratified within economical-geographical strata. A central coordinating centre will monitor data quality at the stages of case ascertainment, medical record abstraction and data management. We will examine patient characteristics, diagnostic testing patterns, procedural treatments and in-hospital outcomes, including death, complications of treatment and costs of hospitalisation. We will additionally characterise variation in treatments and outcomes by patient characteristics, hospital, region and study year. Ethics and dissemination The China PEACE collaboration is designed to translate research into improved care for patients. The study protocol was approved by the central ethics committee at the China National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases (NCCD) and collaborating hospitals. Findings will be shared with participating hospitals, policymakers and the academic community to promote quality monitoring, quality improvement and the efficient allocation and use of coronary catheterisation and PCI in China.
