    A search for two body muon decay signals

    Lepton family number violation is tested by searching for μ+e+X0\mu^+\to e^+X^0 decays among the 5.8×108\times 10^8 positive muon decay events analyzed by the TWIST collaboration. Limits are set on the production of both massless and massive X0X^0 bosons. The large angular acceptance of this experiment allows limits to be placed on anisotropic μ+e+X0\mu^+\to e^+X^0 decays, which can arise from interactions violating both lepton flavor and parity conservation. Branching ratio limits of order 10510^{-5} are obtained for bosons with masses of 13 - 80 MeV/c2^2 and with different decay asymmetries. For bosons with masses less than 13 MeV/c2^{2} the asymmetry dependence is much stronger and the 90% limit on the branching ratio varies up to 5.8×1055.8 \times 10^{-5}.     Mutations in PNPLA6 are linked to photoreceptor degeneration and various forms of childhood blindness

    Blindness due to retinal degeneration affects millions of people worldwide, but many disease-causing mutations remain unknown. PNPLA6 encodes the patatin-like phospholipase domain containing protein 6, also known as neuropathy target esterase (NTE), which is the target of toxic organophosphates that induce human paralysis due to severe axonopathy of large neurons. Mutations in PNPLA6 also cause human spastic paraplegia characterized by motor neuron degeneration. Here we identify PNPLA6 mutations in childhood blindness in seven families with retinal degeneration, including Leber congenital amaurosis and Oliver McFarlane syndrome. PNPLA6 localizes mostly at the inner segment plasma membrane in photo-receptors and mutations in Drosophila PNPLA6 lead to photoreceptor cell death. We also report that lysophosphatidylcholine and lysophosphatidic acid levels are elevated in mutant Drosophila.     Taking risks in sharing data: the use of poetry for dissemination of research

    Background: Dissemination of findings in health sciences research can take many forms, but is usually through publication in peer-reviewed journals, and oral and poster presentations at conferences and events. One of the challenges for the researcher is how to get the message across with maximum impact, particularly when faced with a short time frame for presentation. Aim: The aim of this paper is to reflect on the experience of presenting poetry as a medium for dissemination of research at an international conference. I will consider the reactions of the recipients to my poetry and critically reflect on the transformational journey that occurred as a result of taking a risk in my method of sharing data. Conclusion: The poetry was viewed as a powerful medium through which to deliver the key messages of the research. It can convey meaning accessibly in a short time frame. Feedback from three conferences has been highly positive and will form the impetus for new work. The reaction from each conference audience has affirmed my view that taking a risk - while provoking anxiety - has been transformative in terms of my future dissemination of research and my practice as an educator.sch_nur5pub4212pub

    Muon reconstruction performance of the ATLAS detector in proton–proton collision data at √s = 13 TeV

    This article documents the performance of the ATLAS muon identification and reconstruction using the LHC dataset recorded at √s = 13 TeV in 2015. Using a large sample of J/ψ→μμ and Z→μμ decays from 3.2 fb−1 of pp collision data, measurements of the reconstruction efficiency, as well as of the momentum scale and resolution, are presented and compared to Monte Carlo simulations. The reconstruction efficiency is measured to be close to 99% over most of the covered phase space (|η| 2.2, the pT resolution for muons from Z→μμ decays is 2.9 % while the precision of the momentum scale for low-pT muons from J/ψ→μμ decays is about 0.2%

    Search for photonic signatures of gauge-mediated supersymmetry in 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search is presented for photonic signatures, motivated by generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. This search makes use of proton-proton collision data at √s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb −1 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, and it explores models dominated by both strong and electroweak production of supersymmetric partner states. Experimental signatures incorporating an isolated photon and significant missing transverse momentum are explored. These signatures include events with an additional photon or additional jet activity not associated with any specific underlying quark flavor. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model prediction, and 95% confidence-level upper limits of between 0.083 fb and 0.32 fb are set on the visible cross section of contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. These results are interpreted in terms of lower limits on the masses of gluinos, squarks, and gauginos in the context of generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry, which reach as high as 2.3 TeV for strongly produced and 1.3 TeV for weakly produced supersymmetric partner pairs

    There is a lack of measures that reflect the intervention priorities of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)and that assess the impact of interventions on family experience and quality of life. The Autism Family Experience Questionnaire(AFEQ) was developed through focus groups and online consultation with parents, and reflected parental priorities.It was then administered to the parents of children enrolled in the Pre-school Autism Communication Trial and its 6-yearfollow-up study. The AFEQ showed good convergent validity with well-established measures of child adaptive functioning,parental mental health and parental wellbeing. It was sensitive to change in response to a parent-mediated intervention foryoung children with autism, showing treatment effect at treatment endpoint which increased at six-year follow-up

    A search for prompt lepton-jets in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search is presented for a new, light boson with a mass of about 1 GeV and decaying promptly to jets of collimated electrons and/or muons (lepton-jets). The analysis is performed with 20.3 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Events are required to contain at least two lepton-jets.
