Sustainable product development strategies: Business planning and performance implications

The final published article is available from the link below.Manufacturing firms are under many financial and competitive pressures which focus attention on the performance of their manufacturing processes. In this paper the opportunities for improving the environmental impact of products within the constraints of existing manufacturing infrastructure are examined. Approaches which support sustainability in two aspects are proposed, firstly, the provision of products to the users in ways which extend the product life and secondly, manufacturing approaches which reduce resource usage. This paper outlines three different sustainable development strategies for different product types and describes the cost implications for manufacturers across the life-cycle. The performance measures affected by these strategies are examined drawing on product development case studies from a number of high technology sectors to highlight the different approaches taken. The results are intended to aid manufacturers during the earliest stages of business planning to consider alternative product development approaches which are more sustainable
The Implications of Interactions for Science and Philosophy
Reductionism has dominated science and philosophy for centuries. Complexity
has recently shown that interactions---which reductionism neglects---are
relevant for understanding phenomena. When interactions are considered,
reductionism becomes limited in several aspects. In this paper, I argue that
interactions imply non-reductionism, non-materialism, non-predictability,
non-Platonism, and non-nihilism. As alternatives to each of these, holism,
informism, adaptation, contextuality, and meaningfulness are put forward,
respectively. A worldview that includes interactions not only describes better
our world, but can help to solve many open scientific, philosophical, and

Work relations and the multiple dimensions of the work-life boundary: Hairstyling at home
This article proposes a multidimensional approach to analysis of the work-life boundary and examines the affects of particular social and organizational relations on the preservation or porous-ness of different dimensions. In line with Nippert-Eng (1996), it is suggested that different dimensions of the boundary are reinforced or weakened by different social and organizational pressures. Analysis describes a specific type of multidimensional breaching – instances when work is taken outside of the worksite (spatial breaching) and is carried out outside of work-time (temporal breaching). Empirical research was conducted among hairstylists working in salons and barbershops in a city in the North of England. Because of the nature of the tasks involved in hairstyling – that the skills involved are widely exchangeable and so may be employed in extra-work environments and temporalities – hairstylists provide a nice site for investigating the circumstances when this does (or does not) occur. Data collection involved a comprehensive self-completion survey of salons and barbershops in the city (response rate: 40%; N=132) and semi-structured interviews with 70 stylists working in 52 salons or barbershops. Findings demonstrate that work relations (hairstylists’ structural relations of production – whether a worker is an owner-proprietor, chair-renter, on-commission stylist, basic-only stylist, or trainee) are critical in determining both workers’ ability and desire to resist the seepage of work into their social lives as well as the particular dimensions of the boundary that are breached. This is because work relations affect the relative importance of four identified motivations for taking work out of the salon (income production; training; inter-personal reciprocity rooted in social relations; and inter-personal reciprocity rooted in the workplace)
Teleworking practice in small and medium-sized firms: Management style and worker autonomy
In an empirical study of teleworking practices amongst small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in West London, organisational factors such as management attitudes, worker autonomy and employment flexibility were found to be more critical than technological provision in facilitating successful implementation. Consequently, we argue that telework in most SMEs appears as a marginal activity performed mainly by managers and specialist mobile workers
The ethics of uncertainty for data subjects
Modern health data practices come with many practical uncertainties. In this paper, I argue that data subjects’ trust in the institutions and organizations that control their data, and their ability to know their own moral obligations in relation to their data, are undermined by significant uncertainties regarding the what, how, and who of mass data collection and analysis. I conclude by considering how proposals for managing situations of high uncertainty might be applied to this problem. These emphasize increasing organizational flexibility, knowledge, and capacity, and reducing hazard
Product Differentiation Costs and Global Competition
The growing competitive intensity on the markets determines the emergence of
competition costs that are expressed at a corporate level and have implicit
repercussions for the supply system. This type of costs makes it possible to identify
a close link between competition costs and supply differentiation costs.
Classification by competitive intensity presupposes that the analysis performed
identifies the classification of company costs as the discriminating element, in
terms of the competitive pressure of the context in which the firm operates.
The emergence of competition costs is linked to an attempt to squeeze them as an

The Managed Prosumer:Evolving Knowledge Strategies in the Design of Information Infrastructures
This paper contributes to the reworking of the traditional concepts and methods of Science and Technology Studies that is necessary in order to analyse the development and use of social media and other emerging information infrastructures (IIs). Through long-term studies of the development of two contrasting IIs, the paper examines the prosumer-management strategies by which vendors manage their relationships with their diverse users. Despite the sharp differences between our cases – an online-game with social network features and traditional enterprise systems – we find striking homologies in the ways vendors manage the tensions underpinning the design and development of mass-market products. Thus their knowledge infrastructures – the set of tools and instruments through which vendors maintain an adequate understanding of their multiple users – change in the face of competing exigencies. Market expansion may favour ‘efficient’ quantitative user assessment methods and the construction of abstract user categories for designing new generic solutions and services around market segments. However where a product extends into new and unfamiliar user markets the growing social distance between developer and user may call for ‘richer’ direct ways of knowing the user. We note the emergence of collective fora, which can provide a space for independent action and innovation by users. However, these were managed communities. Certain user relations functions were pushed out to the community or third-party organizations and at other times pulled back in-house – for example, to increase vendor direct control. This picture is far removed from the visions of seamless integration of producers and users encouraged by notions such as prosumer
Digital prosumption labour on social media in the context of the capitalist regime of time
So-called social media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Weibo and LinkedIn are an expression of changing regimes of time in capitalist society. This paper discusses how corporate social media are related to the capitalist organization of time and the changes this organization is undergoing. It uses social theory for conceptualizing changes of society and its time regime and how these changes shape social media. These changes have been described with notions such as prosumption, consumption labour, play labour (playbour) and digital labour. The paper contextualizes digital labour on social media with the help of a model of society that distinguishes three subsystems (the economy, politics, culture) and three forms of power (economic, political, culture). In modern society, these systems are based on the logic of the accumulation of power and the acceleration of accumulation. The paper discusses the role of various dimensions of time in capitalism with the help of a model that is grounded in Karl Marx’s works. It points out the importance of the category of time for a labour theory of value and a digital labour theory of value. Social media are expressions of the changing time regimes that modern society has been undergoing, especially in relation to the blurring of leisure and labour time (play labour), production and consumption time (prosumption), new forms of absolute and relative surplus value production, the acceleration of consumption with the help of targeted online advertising and the creation of speculative, future-oriented forms of fictitious capital
The pursuit of happiness: the social and scientific origins of Hans Selye’s natural philosophy of life

to formulate a precise program of conduct’ and ‘teach us the wisdom to live a rich and
meaningful life’. Nearly two decades later, Selye expanded this limited vision of social
order into a full-blown philosophy of life. In Stress without Distress, first published in 1974,
he proposed an ethical code of conduct designed to mitigate personal and social
problems. Basing his arguments on contemporary understandings of the biological
processes involved in stress reactions, Selye referred to this code as ‘altruistic egotism’.
This article explores the origins and evolution of Selye’s ‘natural philosophy of life’,
analysing the links between his theories and adjacent intellectual developments in
biology, psychosomatic and psychosocial medicine, cybernetics and socio-biology, and
situating his work in the broader cultural framework of modern western societies.Wellcome Trus
